Snow overview for France
Monday 02 March 2015

Some good new snowfall was recorded at altitude in France on Monday morning, but below around 1,800m, rain was falling. This has resulted in some heavy piste conditions, but with temperatures dropping and new snow in the forecast some of the damage will be repaired.

Around 20cm of new snow was recorded at many resorts, although only above around 2,000m owing to the mild temperatures in place across the French Alps. The Argentiere (20/220cm) and Chamonix (20/220cm) Valley was one of these places, with some good falls of powder recorded on the upper slopes. The resort runs were unfortunately not in great condition owing to the rain.

Flaine (65/230cm) also saw 20cm of new snow on the upper slopes, which is forecast to increase during the day on Monday and into the rest of the week.

The Pyrenees were experiencing even milder conditions, with temperature above freezing even on the highest slopes. As a result the pistes are soft at resorts such as Cauterets (360/500cm), but with the huge snow base, there is little worry of bare patches showing through!

The outlook is again a snowy one, with snow expected to fall until Thursday. The totals are expected to be lower than recently, but temperatures are set to drop so what does fall will be more powdery and should fall to all levels. A welcome return to sunny skies is currently set for Friday which is great news if you’re heading out this weekend.

Valfrejus review

Went to Valfrejus in March 2009. Not a massive amount of piste, could do them all in a couple of days, runs not very well groomed. Ideal for Val Thorens though (superb!).
