Snow overview for Switzerland
Thursday 23 March 2017

Thursday March 23rd was a mostly cloudy and snowy day in Switzerland. Conditions are fairly varied around Switzerland right now, although cloud and light snow is the dominate feature. Andermatt (18/400cm) was reporting an astonishing 90cm of fresh snow this morning, this huge overnight snowfall prevented all but six lifts from spinning today. Briefly focusing on this ski area, the next 72 hours will bring improving atmospheric conditions. Potentially some outstanding skiing to be found this weekend, although snow conditions and the avalanche problem will differ dramatically with only small changes in altitude.
Elsewhere Engelberg (20/72cm) and Leysin (10/80cm) also received around 20cms in the past 24 hours. There was some varied and windblown snowfalls around The Eigar and The Matterhorn. Saas Fee (20/203cm) was mostly closed today due to the current extreme weather in the high alpine.

With all this varied storm activity, snow conditions are best described as changeable. For those heading out this weekend or next week, the key to finding the best conditions will be finding the right altitude. Generally speaking the higher the better, but this isn’t always the case in the spring. Expect to find different types of snow all over the mountain. Keep in mind that snow transforms quickly throughout the day influencing both the piste quality and the avalanche risk. Expect upper slopes and zones to close early due to evolving avalanche hazards.

Outstanding off piste and the Ski Club at its best

The snow dumped as we arrived and the avalanche risk soared to level 4 and contributed to them keeping all the higher lifts shut for 3 days. With the poor visibility as it snowed, it made sense to be in Bruson anyway and we enjoyed endless deep, fresh powder in the trees and on the open slope near the Grand Tsai T bar.
Over the next week Verbier and its itineraries progressively opened and the avalanche level returned to 3. This allowed us to catch almost first tracks down several of the best known off piste routes over successive days such as Mont Gele's bowl out to skier's left, Leteygeon down to Mache, Col des Mines and Vallon d'Arbi.
We did three days with mountain guides; when the snow first fell, quite superb powder down from Fontanet all the way to Le Chable and then from Bruson down into the next valley to Chamoille and back by taxi; the next week going across the Rhone valley to Ovronnaz and doing a 2 hour skin up in beautiful conditions; thirdly, once fresh powder was harder to find, a 55 minute hike carrying our skis up Cat Track to access excellent fresh powder on the back of Mont Fort..
To complete our coverage of nearly all Verbier's classic off piste we also twice one day hiked up to the Rock Garden above Lac des Vaux (40 minutes each time carrying skis), once skiing down the Rock Garden itself and then over to the Hidden Valley, which as so often was just great. There was of course the little matter of the 45 minute walk out at the end to Prarion, exacerbated by there not being time for the traditional lunch at Chalet des Alpes.
Much of this was done as part of the Ski Club leading but greatly enhanced by the members that have formed the Ski Touring Club 1936 of Verbier residents or regulars. This provides a ready group of people to form splinter groups from the main leading group if there are too many or differing standards, for getting groups together for mountain guides and, of course for ensuring that apres life is kept at a high standard.
