Snow overview for Switzerland
Monday 15 December 2014

Monday 15th dawned mostly cloudy across the Swiss Alps, with some light snowfall in the forecast for this week. Several resorts are now operating daily, although the best conditions are to be found on the upper slopes and in areas covered by snowmaking.

Zermatt (0/78cm) had a huge 247km of pistes prepared to start the new week and excellent on piste conditions have been reported by our Ski Club leader currently in the resort.

Elsewhere the best conditions remain on the upper slopes, especially as temperatures have warmed slightly over the weekend. Saas Fee (9/210cm) was offering good skiing up on the Allalin glacier and it was also possible to ski back to the resort.

Grimentz-Zinal (0/40cm) is now open daily and was running 15 lifts, accessing some decent piste conditions at altitude. Similarly, Arosa-Lenzerheide (9/30cm) had 10 lifts open over the weekend and will continue to operate throughout the week.

Some light snow is forecast to fall across Switzerland on Monday night. The latest predictions unfortunately are suggesting that freezing levels will rise on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing some rain to slopes below 2,500m.

Verbier's superb off piste
Overall rating: 5 stars

Lift served off piste doesn't get much better than Verbier and most of the classic runs are marked itineraries, giving some added safety comfort. Away from the itineraries, there are plenty of options, the Mont Gele front side (not on the itinerary) has some of the best couloirs around and Chassoure couloir is another steep one and a little hiking opens up plenty of runs.
The on mountain apres is quieter than the Moosevirt in St Anton or Folie Douce in Val d'Isere but very pleasant in several places (Chez Dany being the best known) but the live rock bands and atmosphere in the Farinet in the centre of town set the standard for all the other resorts.
The eating is fantastic as long as you have a credit card and the same apparently applies to the nightclubs!
