Snow overview for Canada
Thursday 29 January 2015

It’s a mixed bag in Canada at present, with the east coast in the midst of a bitterly cold snap, whilst further west mild conditions have brought spring-like conditions.

The Ski Club Leader in Whistler (122cm) reported very soft conditions on the lower slopes thanks to temperatures well above freezing. More snow is needed, especially now the temperature has dropped back slightly, refreezing the base into a hard and icy surface. Spring conditions were also found on the lower slopes of Big White (171cm) and Silver Star (157cm) earlier this week, but with temperatures dropping slightly into the weekend, the pistes will set up hard packed.

Further inland in Alberta, the air remains slightly colder and on Thursday 29th January the mid-mountain temperature was sitting at around -5 at Marmot Basin (100cm). Some light new snow was picked up too, with the three Banff (122cm) resorts seeing between 8 and 19cm of fresh snow in the last week.

Across on the east coast, the bitterly cold weather is continuing. Some decent snowfall is expected prior to the weekend, with Tremblant (100/180cm) and Mont Sainte-Anne (60/120cm) predicted around 20cm of fresh snow. Sunny skies are forecast for Saturday/Sunday, but with mid-mountain temperatures expected to drop as low as -25C, wrap up extremely warm and ensure all exposed flesh is covered.

Let's be upfront - compared to the ski-in/ski-out of other resorts Banff encourages you to add a book or an iPod to your list of skiing essentials for the requred bus rides too and from the slope. But don't get disheartened - it's worth it!

There are three ski areas (well, two and an afterthought), and two real choices of places to stay (well, one and an afterthought). Having stayed in both Banff and Lake Louise the former gives you much more choice - both of ski hill and also restaurants and bars.

The skiing is great. Generally quiet pistes, good off-piste to explore - though typically North American limited choice of on mountain dining. Sunshine is the larger ski area - with more choice of challenging terrain and an epic bump slope. Lake Louise is quieter and greener, and feels cosier as a location. Norquay is good for a short day but is pretty limited otherwise.

There's something for everyone here, but more hardcore, free-spirited skiers might prefer the gladed runs and more challenging bowls elsewhere on the continent.
