Snow overview for Canada
Thursday 05 March 2015

A few light dustings of new snow were picked up in western Canada during the week, nicely refreshing the pistes across the state. The biggest benefactor was Kimberley (136cm) which picked up 15cm of powder on Tuesday. Elsewhere the falls were of 5cm or less, but nonetheless the top up was most welcome. Some nice spells of sunshine were seen on Thursday 5th March, with more of the same expected over the weekend. There are some indications of heavier snow spreading into the state on Tuesday/Wednesday next week which is great news.

Cloudier skies in Alberta also brought some welcome fresh snow, with the Banff (152cm) resorts seeing 11cm of new snow in the past week and Marmot Basin (120cm) picking up 5cm. The colder air in place over the state has preserved the snow in excellent condition and as a result the piste conditions in particular are fantastic. Mostly cloudy weather is forecast for the next seven days, with light snowfall possible – possibly as much as 20cm by Tuesday.

Again Quebec continues to offer some fantastic skiing, with Mont Sainte-Anne (100/160cm) particularly standing out following 25cm of new snow since Wednesday. Cold temperatures and 9cm of new snow at Tremblant (110/190cm) have again helped to provide some great skiing here too. More snow is in the forecast, with 20cm possible by Tuesday.

Let's be upfront - compared to the ski-in/ski-out of other resorts Banff encourages you to add a book or an iPod to your list of skiing essentials for the requred bus rides too and from the slope. But don't get disheartened - it's worth it!

There are three ski areas (well, two and an afterthought), and two real choices of places to stay (well, one and an afterthought). Having stayed in both Banff and Lake Louise the former gives you much more choice - both of ski hill and also restaurants and bars.

The skiing is great. Generally quiet pistes, good off-piste to explore - though typically North American limited choice of on mountain dining. Sunshine is the larger ski area - with more choice of challenging terrain and an epic bump slope. Lake Louise is quieter and greener, and feels cosier as a location. Norquay is good for a short day but is pretty limited otherwise.

There's something for everyone here, but more hardcore, free-spirited skiers might prefer the gladed runs and more challenging bowls elsewhere on the continent.
