Snow overview for Canada
Thursday 27 November 2014

A large snowstorm is currently hitting western Canada and is predicted to last until Friday evening.

The Banff (56/59cm) resorts of Lake Louise and Sunshine Village have both seen lots of snowfall and are predicted to receive up to a further 50cm of snow by Saturday. Very cold but sunny weather is predicted for the weekend so conditions, once the snow clears, will be fantastic.

In BC the weather has been slightly warmer, leading to rain on the lower slopes of Whistler (65cm) but 20cm of fresh snow above mid-station. Several resorts in BC are set to open this weekend and all are reporting huge snowfalls.

Revelstoke (116cm) is reporting over 100cm of snow in the past week, Big White (61/85cm) saw 43cm of snow on Thursday morning and both Red Mountain (95cm) Silver Star (83/110cm) saw 30cm of snowfall overnight. Conditions for opening weekend should be excellent all round.

Colder weather has returned to the east coast of Canada and there is a chance of some light snow at our resorts of Mont Sainte-Anne (15/25cm) and Tremblant (30/60cm).

Let's be upfront - compared to the ski-in/ski-out of other resorts Banff encourages you to add a book or an iPod to your list of skiing essentials for the requred bus rides too and from the slope. But don't get disheartened - it's worth it!

There are three ski areas (well, two and an afterthought), and two real choices of places to stay (well, one and an afterthought). Having stayed in both Banff and Lake Louise the former gives you much more choice - both of ski hill and also restaurants and bars.

The skiing is great. Generally quiet pistes, good off-piste to explore - though typically North American limited choice of on mountain dining. Sunshine is the larger ski area - with more choice of challenging terrain and an epic bump slope. Lake Louise is quieter and greener, and feels cosier as a location. Norquay is good for a short day but is pretty limited otherwise.

There's something for everyone here, but more hardcore, free-spirited skiers might prefer the gladed runs and more challenging bowls elsewhere on the continent.
