Snow overview for Switzerland
Thursday 23 April 2015

It has been a gloriously sunny week at for those resorts lucky enough to still be open. As with France, a significant change in the weather is expected over the weekend, initially bringing rain before the weather gets much colder and snow falls to all levels by Monday.

The biggest skiable areas in Switzerland are currently Zermatt (0/240cm) and Samnaun (20/180cm), with more limited terrain on offer elsewhere. Sadly it is no longer possible to ski right back down to either resort, but conditions up high remain good and both are set to continue skiing into May.

Engelberg (0/350cm) and Verbier (0/240cm) continue to offer some decent snowsports on the upper slopes, although the latter is set to close this weekend. Andermatt (0/550cm) retains its huge upper base, but lower down the warm weather is beginning to take its toll on the snow.

Sunday 26th April marks the end of the season at Andermatt, Engelberg, Murren, Pontresina and Verbier.

Ideal for a long weekend

Being just an hour and a half transfer time from Zurich airport and with Swiss offering a late evening flight back to Heathrow on Sunday's and free ski carriage, Engelberg is ideal for a long weekend giving 3 full days skiing. We booked through Flexiski and got the ski club discount.

We flew out on Thursday morning and were in resort by 4.30pm. Hotel Terrace was comfortable and welcoming and our smallish ensuite double looked out over the town. We opted for the Half Board option which was buffet style for both breakfast and dinner, with a good choice, particularly at breakfast. Unlimited house wine was included at dinner, which was a nice surprise and made the £50 per person charge for the 3 nights very reasonable indeed. It wasn't gourmet food, but it was more than adequate. Lift passes were included in the hotel rate and they even provided us a room to shower in before we left for our private transfer back to the airport on the Sunday just after 5pm.

The only downside was that it took the best part of an hour from leaving the hotel in the morning to get to the top of the mountain... Once there, lift queues weren't bad and the skiing was very good. The resort is known for its huge off-piste opportunities but, other than the itinerary linking two areas, we didn't venture off- piste at all. There was sufficient on-piste skiing but we covered pretty much all the runs each day. The long blue back into the village was in good condition, though it tended to become slushy towards the bottom later in the day.

Eating and drinking up the mountain was generally reasonably priced and certainly less expensive than I expected.

All in all, I'd recommend Engelberg for a short break ski trip, but 3 days is enough, unless you're into the off-piste stuff. I'm sure we'll go back!
