Snow overview for Austria

06 December 2018

Conditions continued to be lacklustre across much of Austria due to lack of snow at lower altitudes, while some resorts begun to feel ready for the season. Fresh snow in the Gastein Valley, though mild temperatures meant this risked falling as rain at lower elevations. Also fell in the Zillertal, including 6cm above Mayrhofen (0/60cm), where conditions looked to be more favourable than much of the rest of Austria thanks to the elevation and supplemental snowmaking.

Zell am Zee Kaprun (0/95cm) saw some of the highest snowfall amounts reported in the past week, with 35cm over four days at the highest altitudes. Though only 28km of slopes were open, the coverage at least made what could be skied very enjoyable, with some limited off piste opportunities.

Continuing cloud cover over much of the country led to reduced visibility though may at least also result in much needed snow, especially for those resorts at lower elevations which continue to more closely resemble autumn than winter.

The good news is that the storm, currently beginning to deposit snow over much of the Alps is expected to provide a substantial improvement in the conditions over much of Austria. Fresh snow will fall most heavily in the Arlberg region, as well as resorts close to the Swiss border. Dropping temperatures will also result in good quantities of snow falling down into the valleys, welcome news for the lower altitude resorts.
