Snow overview for Austria

10 December 2019

Heavy snow fell to the west of Austria on Monday and therefore some great skiing conditions can be found in resorts to the west this week such as Obergurgl and Sölden. Both resorts now have over 75% of their lifts open. Mayrhofen is also offering great skiing conditions and has 40 out of 45 lifts open currently.

Further to the east more snow is needed to ensure that more terrain can open up and that more lifts can turn. The good news is that significant amounts of snow is forecasted to fall in the Alps this week. Ischgl is offering some of the best skiing in Austria and 108cm of snow is forecast to fall there over the next 6 days. Only 27cm of that is forecast to fall in the next 3 days, meaning that the early to mid part of the week will be a great time to get out on the snow.

The heavy snow will also be of much help to resorts such as Lech and St Anton where only half of the lifts are currently open. Hopefully we will start to see a move away from the reliance on snowmaking in these resorts and the lower resorts in the Tirol and Salzburgerland.
