Kaprun Ski Resort
With the snowsure Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, a huge new 3S gondola link and a convenient base town, Kaprun is a great Austrian option.
Access from the town of Kaprun to the glacier slopes above was transformed in 2019/20 by the building of the new K-onnection gondola, linking the local Maiskogel pistes to the snowsure, lofty runs above. This has now cut out the need to drive up the valley to the base of the glacier access lift and makes skiing back to your accommodation a possibility. The Maiskogel slopes will keep you busy for a morning, with the main attraction lying higher up. Here, the snowsure glacier slopes reach 3,029m and there's a good network of blues and reds, plus a couple of steeper slopes lower down that include the renowned Black Mamba piste.
The village itself is a very convenient base, with lots of accommodation a very short walk from the Maiskogel gondola. There's some decent bars and restaurants too, plus there's the option of visiting Zell am See which is very nearby and home to livelier après ski and a bigger choice of dining options. The drive from Salzburg is quick, taking less than an hour and half.
