Pleasant little working valley town with a car-free centre at the heart of the Montafon region, with access to both the Hochjoch area (see St Gallenkirch) from a cable car near the centre of town and the Golm ski area (a few km away). At Golm four chairs and a drag serve easy blue and red slopes above the trees. A six-pack goes to the top of the area, linked via a ski tunnel to slopes on the back of the hill, including the Diabolo black run (the steepest in the valley). Snowmaking covers many of the upper slopes and the run to the valley. Ernest Hemingway ensconced himself in Schruns in 1925/26, and his favourite drinking table in the hotel Taube can be admired. Après-ski is not the big deal it is in many Austrian resorts, but a few places get quite lively. There's a big sports centre.
