Aussois is on the sunny side of the valley, a short winding drive up from Modane (served by the TGV). It's a charming old village of stone and wood, complete with central fountain, with quite a respectable little ski area. There are good nursery slopes next to the village. A fast and a slow chair go up from the village to the treeline, where a six-pack goes on to the top height of 2750m. Another slow chair and a drag serve the main west-facing upper slopes, red and blue, and a black goes away from the lifts to drop about 1000m before joining a green run to the village, with plentiful off-piste opportunities. There are snowshoe trails on the Aussois plateau, and more challenging ones across the hillside near Sardières, where there are also extensive cross-country trails. The village offers a couple of B&Bs and modest hotels, as well as plenty of good-value apartments, some in slope-side locations.
