Brides les Bains is a quiet spa town in valley below Méribel, and is connected to it by gondola. It is probably best known for serving as the 1992 Winter Olympics village. The main attraction is that the place offers a cheaper alternative to the higher resorts and makes a sensible base for visiting other ski areas in the region. As well as the spa centre, there are several good value hotels and chalets, adequate shops, restaurants, a casino and a couple of bars - although evenings are generally quiet. The gondola up to Mèribel is a long, tedious ride that does not run in the evenings, but accesses a couple of small chalet developments part way up and some decent off-piste when conditions permit.
