Across the deep Maurienne valley from Aussois, La Norma could not be more different - a modern, car-free resort in the shade of its steep, eponymous mountain. Like Aussois, it is easily reached from Modane and its TGV railway station. The resort claims 65km of runs (or 700 ha - very fashionable). Most of the skiing, above and below the treeline, is on two flanks of that mountain - a major sector on the right accessed by a gondola and then two slow chairs to 2750m (giving an impressive vertical of 1400m), and a minor sector reached by a fast chair then two slow ones to 2500m. As you may have gathered, slow lifts dominate. There are excellent nursery slopes at village level and at both mid-mountain areas, with a long winding green track back to the base. But this is essentially a red-gradient mountain, genuinely black in places, so it is not great for timid intermediates. One reporter found lots to do off-piste from the upper lifts. The resort is compact and family-friendly, with lodgings close to the lifts (though very little is ski-in/ski-out). A reporter who visited this year pronounced the place 'great for families on a budget'.
