Snow overview for France

26 March 2019

If you saw a cloud while you’re were skiing in the French Alps on Tuesday 26th March then you’re an unlucky skier. It was suntan weather across the board with temperatures ranging from -5 to +1 and not a cloud in the country.

All this isn't great for the snow of course, and there's been a lot of spring skiing which can be icy in the morning and get slushy as the day goes on.

The snow is good on piste despite the warm weather in alpine resorts, though, particularly the higher up you go. It can be a bit patchy off the piste, but the huge snowfall back in January in a lot of Alpine resorts means the sun isn’t causing any huge problems just yet.

The views have been stunning too, it's relatively quiet on the slopes at a lot of resorts after February holidays, and it’s perfect weather for putting in a big shift in the morning to explore a resort before stopping off for a lunch break and topping up a goggle tan.

More snow is on the way in some of the particularly popular resorts, including in Avoriaz, Chamonix, Les Gets, Morzine and more, but that’ll likely be coming towards the end of those six days, so until then, enjoy the sun and spring skiing.

Some parts of the French Pyrenees are still waiting on much needed snow. Font Romeu still only has 50cm of snow on upper slopes, and southerly resorts in the French Alps like Risoul and neighbour Vars haven’t seen too much snow since the beginning of March.
