Cogne is one of Aosta valley's larger villages, and of more appeal to cross-country skiers than for its tiny downhill ski area. There are dozens of varied trails, through the surrounding woodland. The village has a good choice of pleasant and simple hotels, shops and restaurants, as well as a pulse gondola up to the slopes. The five lifts serve a small, uncrowded area of north-facing slopes that suit unadventurous intermediates. It makes a worthwhile short outing from nearby Pila too.
