Mt Hutt, an hour west of Christchurch on the south island, has a 670m vertical and some of the country's most impressive, consistently steep, wide-open terrain - all within view of the Pacific Ocean. The lift system is half the size of Whakapapa's but has been totally upgraded and rearranged. The main area is an open bowl with gentle terrain in the centre and the steeper terrain up higher, ringing the ski field. Heli-skiing is popular, with a choice of backcountry trips.
