Rainbow Ski Resort
Rainbow is a small, family-friendly ski hill in the beautiful Marlborough region of New Zealand’s South Island.
Despite a modest vertical of just over 200m, the Rainbow ski area packs a decent punch for its size. At the base there’s an excellent learning area, with good progression on to the top-to-bottom green from the summit of the resort’s longest lift – the T-bar. For more advanced skiers and boarders, the West Bowl is a popular destination on a sunny day and in fresh powder, the steeper lines of the East Face come into their own. Snow reliability has improved in recent years thanks to a fleet of snowmaking machines and well placed snow fences.
Nearby accommodation is fairly limited, so you’ll need to look for places down in the valley within the Nelson Lakes National Park. It’s also a little further away than other New Zealand resorts from an airport, with the drive up from Christchurch taking at least 6 hours. As a result you’ll definitely want to tie a visit in with a trip to Mt Lyford, or a visit to the beautiful coastline of South Island.
