The next piece of kit to undergo scrutiny from Alf is Odlo's multi-functional midlayer - the Primaloft Loftone.

PRICE: £130

WHAT THEY SAY: "Body-mapping construction, excellent thermal insulation, perfect breathability and windproofness, reflective elements to increase visibility and one zip pocket."

WHAT ALF SAYS: The Loftone is a technical, multi-functional mid-layer that you could use equally well for ski touring, downhill skiing or running. It utilises a windproof outer with lightweight, 70 per cent recycled, Primaloft insulation for minimum bulk and weight along with warmth and breathability.

This also gives a certain amount of water resistance, with front and rear panels specifically designed to aid in moisture management and overall comfort.

Because of its light weight and bulk, the Loftone is the kind of piece you can easily stash in your pack, and if you want to use it for running too you’ll like the reflective strips front and back.

Features are out of necessity pretty limited and consist of one zipped hand pocket on the right, hand gaiters and a ‘watch compatible cuff’. This lies on the left and allows you to see your watch without pulling the cuff up – some indication of the kind of user the Loftone is aimed at.

FOR: Lightweight and very packable

AGAINST: Minimalist design won’t appeal to everyone
