Alf Alderson shares his thoughts on the O'Neill 88 Shred Bib
O’Neill 88 Shred Bib Pants RRP £139.99
As with their Frozen Wave anorak the 88 Shred Bib is a throwback to O’Neill’s earlier days, being based on designs from the 80s as the name suggests. This means they won’t appeal to everyone, but if you like the style you’re gonna like the value for money of the 88 Shred Bib too.
The 10k waterproof/breathable recycled fabric will keep the elements out, especially since all critical seams are taped and the outer fabric features DRW water repellent, and you also get reinforcements on the legs and hems so you can give these pants a good bit of stick.
The bib comes with a large chest pocket for that Bob the Builder look, and below this are two zipped handwarmer pockets and two rear pockets with Velcro flaps – this is about my only niggle with this product as the flaps won’t be quite as good at keeping snow out as zips would.
A soft, warm microfleece lining means you don’t always need to wear a base layer under these pants, whilst adjustable hems and elasticated snow gaiters round things off, and if you’re looking to take a trip back in time the 88 Shred Bib is a good place to start.
FOR Great value, funky looks
AGAINST Not everyone wants to revisit the 80s; minor point this, but zips on the rear pockets would be better than Velcro flaps.
