What's in the box? Our reviewer examines the Barryvox Avalanche package by Mammut

This boxed set (great for Christmas!) comes with all the basics you need for freeriding and ski touring safely in the backcountry: a transceiver, shovel and probe (but at £30 less than buying them separately.) It’s the lowest priced of three boxed sets from Mammut, with the others retailing at £369 and £439, and as a starter pack it’s just the job.

The Barryvox transceiver is a three-antenna model which is the simplest of Mammut’s transceivers. This is no bad thing as it makes it quick and easy to get the hang of operating it. Likewise, the aluminium Probe 240 and aluminium Alugator Ride shovel are also the ‘budget’ models in the range but are still perfectly fine for the job. The probe can be clicked into place and used whilst wearing gloves and the collapsible shovel features a hard, anodised blade which cuts through snow more effectively than plastic models.

For anyone just getting into backcountry skiing this package is well-worth checking out – it’s not the cheapest boxed set around but the contents are all high quality and it still works out cheaper than buying your avy gear individually.

FOR Great start-up pack containing all the avalanche safety essentials.
AGAINST There are cheaper boxed set options.
