Base layers don’t have to be boring! Ski Club’s Sophie Mead reviews Oosc’s vibrant thermals to find out if style meets substance

Ever since I saw Hollywood actress, Margot Robbie, sporting one of Oosc’s Rainbow Road snowsuits I was hooked on the bright, bold design. Due to popular demand, the company released a matching base layer, so I got my hands on a pair to put them to the test both on the slopes and the yoga mat.

It's easy to be distracted by flashy designs and favour looks over practicality, and that is exactly why I wanted to test this set. Firstly I wore the set under my salopettes and ski jacket during seven days in Chamonix. Conditions were sunny but cold, and my temperature was consistently comfortable throughout the trip. During the evenings there were yoga sessions so the thermals doubled up as gymwear, but most people will opt to change into fresh sports clothes off the slopes. That said, the Oosc base layers allowed for easy movement throughout several sessions, demonstrating that the four-way stretch technology works a treat!

Secondly, I tested the base layers in the mountains of Andorra where the weather was harsh, windy and very cold. I was standing for long periods of time whilst reporting for the Freeride World Tour so it was essential that my base layers insulated me effectively. During the long competition days and blizzards that followed in early March, the Oosc thermals kept me cosy, with no chafing or discomfort at all.

Technical

The fabric of the Rainbow Road thermals is super-soft, giving them as a cosy feel without being too heavy. The base layers are made of polyester and spandex with four-way stretch technology which means that they are comfortable whether you are shredding the slopes or holding a downward dog on the yoga mat. They can also be used as trekking, gym or cycling-wear since they are designed to keep you warm when it's cold and cool when it’s hot. The fabric is moisture-wicking so any sweat is quickly absorbed to keep you cool and comfortable. Both the top and bottoms have flat lock seams to avoid chafing and the fabric is anti-bacterial with ventilation under the arms and behind the knees to optimise freshness and breathability.

Design

Fashion meets function with Oosc’s fabulously bright and colourful designs. The Rainbow Road set is loud and proud, with a vibrant multi-coloured stripy pattern across the torso, arms and knees. The colours flow in opposite directions which gives the set a stylish, racer feel and the crisp white base screams winter chic. The set is unisex fit and I find it slightly loose around the shoulders, perhaps to give room for the male frame. However, the leggings fit a female build perfectly and the high-waist jacquard waistband is flattering and comfortable. The beauty of Oosc sets is that they are versatile, providing optimum warmth and breathability under ski wear and stealing the show when you strip off at aprés!
The sets come in a variety of dazzling patterns such as leopard print, comic strip, palm leaf and all sorts of geometric shapes and colour combinations. The challenge is choosing your favourite!

The Rainbow Road base layer set was tested on two ski trips: Ski Club’s Wellness Holiday (where they doubled as yoga leggings) and Ordino Arcalís, Andorra. Both trips threw varied conditions at the thermals and they performed excellently for every activity they were tested on.

Oosc says:
We designed these bad boys with peachy soft insides so that they’re super comfortable; whether you’re trekking up a mountain or flexing in a studio! Our OOSC Fresh Tech is designed for keeping you warm when it’s cold but also has ventilation in key heat zones to make sure you don’t overheat! They have a soft jacquard waistband to hold them firmly in place & can be used in the mountains or in the gym!

For: Practical and stylish multi-purpose thermal set which you can wear with pride!
Against: Unisex fit won’t suit everyone, and the long-line style may ride up on some frames
