Grassroots of the sport are healthier than ever

This year the British Schoolgirls’ Races attracted their biggest field of competitors yet. At the end of January, over 160 schoolgirls got a taste for racing at an elite level in Flaine, France. Girls followed in the footsteps of a number of GB’s most celebrated female skiers, namely Chemmy Alcott, the Ski Club’s Honorary President.

The annual Ski Club sponsored races attracted girls from 35 schools from across the country. Participating in a full weekend of race training and competition, provided many of the girls their first taste of racing.

Could their be a future champion among the starters?

British Schoolgirls' Races

Taking place in Flaine, France

Race training was followed by a full weekend of Alpine Ski racing. A Giant Slalom timed race, head-to-head team Parallel Slalom and technical Slalom race all culminated in prize giving at the end of the weekend.

After heavy snowfall in the lead up to the event there were questions in the minds of many of the girls about whether conditions would enable them to perform at their best. Fortunately the weekend was blessed with sunshine and blue skies. Monday morning’s GS race took place with firm snow underfoot and competitors enjoyed a pristine course

That afternoon the parallel slalom was filled with drama, some races being decided by photo finish - the relays were that tight! 32 teams started the knockout tournament, eventually they were whittled down to just two, with the final winners being:

Parallel Team Slalom Results

1-    Millfield A

2-    Downe House A

The fantastic weather continued in to day 2 with more blue skies and sunshine as the technical Slalom race began. 48 turns in under 60 seconds over a vertical drop of 120m is no mean feat, and so the girls were coming through the finish line exhausted, but elated. Towards the end of the start list, some less experienced racers were rattled by the scraped and rutted course, an unavoidable able part of high level racing!
