In my previous blog, I touched on the fact I am working at IG Group and am lucky enough to receive three months of leave per year to continue in my ski cross journey. As well as this IG is contributing towards my season, helping to fund a few extra events. IG is a trading and investment services provider which has a global presence. I look forward to promoting the IG brand this winter.

Rehab - Surrey Physio

Unfortunately, around 6 months ago following a summer break, I sustained an injury to my lower back. Having fought against various minor back problems, I knew this one was much more significant. The injury occurred during my fourth session whilst in the gym lifting a lightweight. Thankfully, a few weeks later I was put in contact with Tim Allardyce at Surrey physio, by the British team physio. For years previously I had physio support from the University of Portsmouth, which is now not accessible from South East London. A few weeks into my treatment, Tim agreed to sponsor me. For anyone who has required physiotherapy, or similar, this meant I could save a large amount of money that would continue going towards my skiing. Tim saw that I was majority self-funded and wanted to see me back on skis competing. The good news... following an MRI scan and seeing numerous consultants disc issues, there wasn’t any major back problems. The bad news... the pain persists, however to a far less degree. Since September I have been following strict rehab which has got me to a position where I can do any exercise in the gym without pain. This is all under remote guidance from my strength and conditioning coach Rob Rowland at the University of Portsmouth with help from Tim too. My back pain is still prevalent when in my ski race position for a sustained period. I’m using this as a key indicator as to when I’ll be ready to race. In order to reach this goal, I have been tasked with loosening my hamstrings, increasing the stability in my back, as well as my core strength. My current gym block consists of 3 strength, 3 cardio and 3 core sessions per week which I must fit around my full-time job.

Back in the Mountains

At the time of writing this article I am out training in Crans-Montana, Switzerland accompanied by The Cross Collective (TXC) ski cross academy. There have been tremendous improvements in my back’s capacity since last training in November. Below I have included a few videos of training so far, here in Switzerland. I am taking my recovery on a week by week basis and hope to be back competing later this season.
