Skiing can be expensive, but it need not be - especially at these five budget, low-cost ski resorts as chosen by the Ski Club's team of in-house experts:

If you’re looking to ski on a budget this season then resort selection is an important criteria. Every resort will have some bargains out there but by choosing one the following list you’re bound to save some money this winter.

Other top tips include booking outside of school holidays, snapping up last-minute bargains, buying your food and drink down in the valley and of course utilising the extensive range of Ski Club Discounts.

Soldeu (Andorra)

Andorra is a highly underrated country when it comes to skiing, and prices for both skiing and living are well below average. Soldeu is part of the vast Grandvalira ski area, home to 210km of snowsure and fantastically groomed pistes, all served by 59 lifts – almost half of which are high-speed. A 6-day lift pass for the entire area costs less than €250 for adults and those under 5 or over 70 can get a lift pass for free – making this a great destination for the whole family. Look out for food and drink discounts at the resort’s bars and restaurants too – especially during the middle of the week and at happy hour.

Sauze d’Oulx (Italy)

Sauze d’Oulx sits right at the heart of the Italian Via Lattea (Milky Way) giving access to a huge 390km of linked pistes. There’s a great variety of runs suitable for all abilities making it great for groups and families and the valley-hopping nature of the slopes gives you a real sense of travel. As a result you get excellent value from your lift pass, which costs less than €200 for 6 days. Food and drink is another area where you’ll save money, and of course with it being Italy the quality of even the budget option is likely to be good. For example a pint of beer comes in at around €3 and pizzas can be found on the mountain and in town for €8.

Montgenevre (France)

Just over the Italian border is Montgenevre – one of France’s best budget options. Access to the entire Via Lattea ski area and its 390km of connected slopes is relatively simple although it can take a while to get to the Sestriere end of the system. Accommodation here is good value – with a 4-person apartment in the 4* Le Hameau Des Airelles starting at as little as £75/night. And with recent improvements to the town, including a new tunnel to divert traffic and new sports centre, heading to Montgenevre has become even more attractive.

Ellmau (Austria)

One of the cheapest resorts in Austria (which is excellent value anyway!), Ellmau is a perfect resort for beginners and families. It is linked to the massive Ski Welt – which covers 280km of pistes and is home to one of the world’s best and fastest lift systems. Six days of access to the entire areas costs €235 for adults and this includes the excellent ski bus service which lets you explore the entire area. Catered chalet holidays can be picked up for less than £600 for a week here – including flights and transfers, which is a real bargain. Add to this €2 beers and lunch on the mountain for two for under €20 and you can see why Ellmau is a great-value option.

Bansko (Bulgaria)

No list of budget destinations would be complete without a Bulgarian option – and of these Bansko is definitely the best. It is situated in the stunning Pirin National Park and has 75km of pistes connected by 14 fast modern lifts, including some great off piste when the snow is right. A 6-day adult pass will set you back less than £120 and a beer on the mountain will be less than £2 – both less than half the price of somewhere comparable in the Alps. Students will pay £107, children ages 7-12 £58 and children under 7 just £3. And luxury in Bulgaria doesn’t cost as much as you would expect – for example week in a double room in the 5* boutique Amira Hotel comes in at just over £500.
