If you haven’t been skiing at Christmas you are in for a treat, find out which are the best resorts for the festivities in our top 5 list!

Most ski areas aren’t particularly busy, prices are not as eye-watering as New Year and you are pretty much guaranteed a white Xmas! Whilst most resorts offer some sort of festive celebrations, like carol singing or fireworks, there are a few that really stand out from the crowd.

Levi, Lapland

Though it isn’t the biggest or most challenging of ski area, Levi is top of the Christmas Resort nice list for a pretty important reason, it’s practically the home of Santa Claus! Though many of the activities are aimed squarely at the family market, if you don’t get into the festive feeling visiting Levi you must be the Grinch! You can visit Santa and the Elves in his workshop and spend a few hours listening to Christmas stories and if the kids haven’t had enough of Santa you can also arrange a private visit to your cabin on Christmas eve. As well as all the Santa themed activities there are loads of fantastic excursions to enjoy, Reindeer rides, husky sledding, ice fishing and even a Frozen inspired Ice Kingdom you can visit. Sitting well inside the Arctic Circle means that you are very likely to catch a glimpse of the magical Northern Lights. Though it might not be the traditional turkey dinner, the restaurants of Levi pull out all the stops when it comes to festive feasting, with up to 9 courses including local dishes like pickled herring, smoked salmon, elk pastrami and err jellied reindeer you’ll have a meal to remember.

Ischgl, Austria

Austria does Christmas very well, being a predominantly catholic country, with stunning decorated trees in most resorts and Christmas concerts in town squares and churches, it’s a lovely place to visit for a traditional celebration. Ischgl in the Tirol is particularly notable, the resort itself is ‘chocolate box’ picturesque and there are Christmas markets on the car free streets throughout the week. Their Boxing Day ‘Christmas in the Mountains’ concert of carols from all around the world is truly heart-warming. On the slopes there are fun activities like tobogganing, horse drawn sleigh rides and an ice rink in the town centre. Ischgl is a great resort for all levels of skier and snowboarder, with plenty of blue and red runs to occupy intermediates and fantastic off piste terrain for the advanced.

For those looking for a festive feast, Aspen is also home to over 100 restaurants, serving everything from tacos to fine dining. The ski area itself is extensive and offers a huge variety of terrain including fantastic in-bounds off piste. Aspen is famed for the excellent customer service of their staff, so you will be pampered both on and off the slopes.

Flaine, France

Though Flaine may not be an obvious choice for a Christmas break, this year they are pulling out all the stops as it is also the 50th anniversary of the resort. On the 24th a festive torch-lit procession leads Santa into town along with a fireworks display. Boxing day is the official 50 years celebration with a light show and huge fireworks display planned. On the 27th it is ‘Children's’ Day’ with snowman building contest and sledge racing.
