The transition from lift assisted to self-powered ascent can initially be an intimidating one. For many, the thought of a set of binding that releases at the heel is an unsettling one. The process of embracing this discipline of skiing may seem daunting but can prove to be a liberating one.

Mountain Tracks, part of the Ski Club family, runs Ski Touring Skills courses throughout the season in a number of resorts to help you take your skiing beyond the resort boundaries. The courses are suitable for any confident off piste skier looking to safely learn and practice the essential skills you will need if you are planning on ski touring in an alpine environment.

Mountain Tracks

The courses are perfect if you have no prior ski touring experience and are particularly popular with those who wish to progress to ski touring in glaciated terrain. If you are training for a tour later in the season like the Haute Route the courses are the perfect preparation.

In your classmates, you will find like-minded enthusiastic skiers of a similar ability to learn with, share old stories and discuss future adventures. And what classroom can beat the glaciated, high altitude terrain of the Alps?!

The curriculum includes route planning and navigation, skinning skills, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, transceiver training, recognising avalanche terrain and avoiding avalanches, emergency procedures and using crampons and an ice-axe. Your teachers are IFMGA Guides or Instructors qualified to the highest level, so rest assured you are in the safest hands in the Alps.
