Situated 600 meters beneath the snowsure resort of Passo Tonale, Ponte di Legno is conveniently connected through two gondolas, as well as a number of pistes.

Ponte di Legno makes for a great base to explore the region, and its wooded setting offers great shelter in unfavourable weather conditions, unlike its loftier neighbours. While the pistes may be considered to better suit beginner and intermediate skiers, the resort is home to some fantastic off piste terrain for its more advanced visitors.

Pros and cons

One of the Alps’ best value and most snowsure resorts
Great beginner areas, especially at Passo Tonale as it offers progression onto longer blues
A very good lift system, with mostly fast quad chairlifts and gondolas

Upper slopes can be challenging in bad weather
Lowers lopes have potential to become slushy during Spring
Relatively quite resort in terms of activites

On the Slopes

For beginners there’s a small zone on the edge of the resort but you should instead head to the fantastic, sunny learning areas up at Passo Tonale. From this point there is excellent progression on to longer blues, with most runs being served by fast quad chairlifts. Intermediates will enjoy the longer reds on the sunny side of the valley at Passo_Tonale, or the pretty, wooded slopes immediately above Ponte di Legno. It is also worth exploring the runs on the Presena Glacier, but less confident skiers or boarders may want to download the final section to avoid the steeper black return run.

Although it has a family and beginner friendly reputation, the ski offers up some decent pistes for experts – especially the descent from the glacier and also on the slopes of Corno d’Aola above the village. Due to the altitude, any fresh snow usually stays cold and dry, meaning that the off piste often retains great snow – this is certainly an underrated facet of the resort.

In the Resort

As with Passo Tonale further up the hill, the accommodation is very family-friendly and is generally very good value, even during the main holiday weeks. Alternative options include the lower village of Temu or up in Passo Tonale itself.

Away from the slopes there isn’t a vast amount to entertain children, book a big hotel if you’re looking for post-skiing activities or things to do in an afternoon off. The après is increasingly lively up at Passo Tonale, with some good bars utilising the sunny plateau and the foot of the slopes – but Ponte di Legno itself is quieter.

Getting to Ponte di Legno

The nearest airport is Bergamo and it lies around two hours drive to the south of the resort. Verona is another option at two and a half hours drive, as are the two Milan airports – both of these are around three hours drive away.

Spring conditions will dominate across the Italy throughout this week and into the weekend, with something akin to a freeze-thaw cycle moving into the region.

Northerly areas will see a few flurries of snowfall through the middle of this week; up to 5cm can be expected down on Thursday in the Dolomites, with 5cm preceding this in the northwest through Tuesday and Wednesday. Conditions will remain fairly consistent heading towards the weekend, before the freezing line drops dramatically into the weekend hitting below 1,000m overnight Saturday into Sunday.

This will see unsettled weather and snowfall at the same time, with 25 to 30cm expected over westerly reaches; this will drop to just a few flurries in the Dolomites.

A mix of sun or cloud – and potentially some snow – will continue into the new week.
