The Ski Club is inviting you to experience the thrill of ski racing and be part of our Ski Club Race Team. If you are a bit of a speed demon, love skiing fast and enjoy a challenge, you can join us and share a racing experience with like-minded skiers.

The Race 2020

To launch the inaugural season for the Ski Club Race Team, we're heading out to Flaine to compete in the best (and most fun!) amateur ski racing competition in the Alps. Join us for what promises to be a fantastic trip, competing against other amateur ski clubs from across Europe – this is your chance to shine and to potentially launch the Ski Club to racing glory! Here are the details:

  • Amateur International Club Championship (AICC)
  • Organised by The Ladies Ski Club
  • March 11-13 2020
  • Flaine, France

The premier European Ski Clubs come together annually to share their passion in a fun and challenging event. The friendly competition sees people with a wide variety of skiing levels competing for their club and giving their best performances on the mountain. The evenings are filled with social gatherings, drinks and dinners full of stories of the races, shared experiences and laughter.

The Racing Events

There will be a Giant Slalom and a Super-G race as part of the Championships as well as a just for the fun of it Parallel Slalom.

  • Giant Slalom consists of relatively long turns where you are constantly turning one turn after another
  • Super-G has longer turns with some straighter gliding sections where only minimal turns are required
  • Parallel Slalom is when two race courses are set up next to each other and you race head to head on quick paced shorter turns

The Teams and Categories

You do not need to be a pro and our Ski Club Race Team is open to anyone who can ski a black run under control – we would suggest a minimum Ski Club grading of Purple+ (on piste) for entrants. Teams are made up of 3 or 4 people in one of the following 7 categories:

  • 18-44 Men / Women
  • 45-59 Men / Women
  • 60-69 Men / Women
  • 70 + Mixed: 2 men and 1 or 2 women

Note: It will be possible for a racer to race in a younger age category or for a woman to race in a men's category, but there is no mixed team category under 70.

The Pre-Race Training

We are hugely excited that we have a successful international race coach, Amanda Pirie, to lead the Ski Club Team Training. She also has loads of experience coaching at amateur club level with the Ladies Ski Club and The Kandahar Ski Club. Amanda personalises her coaching to make sure that everyone works towards their individual goals.

The three training days in Flaine will consist of a morning race course training and an afternoon free-ski technical training and skills practice. In addition, Amanda will lead technical and tactical reviews through video analysis sessions.

  • Dates: 8-10 March 2020
  • Times: 9am – 4pm plus video analysis
  • Price: Per day: £80 / For three days: £225

Note: The training days will be confirmed when a minimum number of people have booked a place.

The Trip

If you wish to share accommodation or want to travel out as a group, we can arrange group accommodation in a shared apartment (such as the Pierre et Vacances La Forêt) for about £400 per person, between 7-14 March 2020 (7 nights) with twin, double or single room options. Please note the price will depend on numbers.

If you'd rather have the flexibility in travel dates and accommodation preferences, we suggest that you book your own travel and accommodation. There will be several evening events and a gala dinner during the Championships, therefore we suggest that you book bed and breakfast or self-catering accommodation.

The Ski Club can also offer Saturday transfers at set times for £50 each way.

Additional costs:

  • Meals and drinks
  • Race entry (about £100)
  • Travel insurance that covers amateur alpine ski racing
  • Travel – flights and transfers
  • Lift pass (the Ski Club are researching group discount options)
  • Ski hire (the Ski Club are researching group discount options on hiring race skis)
