Sils Maria Ski Resort
The pretty lakeside village of Sils Maria has direct access to the Corvatsch mountain, part of the St Moritz ski area.
A cable car from the edge of town rises rapidly to the Corvatsch ski area, one of the two biggest in the valley and home to 120km of slopes and a massive 1500m of ski vertical. Most of the slopes suit intermediate skiers upwards, with some great off piste accessible from the lift system and the world-renowned Corvatsch terrain park. There's also Switzerland's longest night skiing slope to try out.
Away from the hustle, bustle and luxury of St Moritz, Sils Maria is a quieter and cheaper alternative base from which to explore the Engadine. There's lots to do off the slopes and once the nearby lakes freeze, these become big playgrounds for ice skating, cross country skiing and a whole manner of other winter activities – and of course there's the Cresta Run a little further up the valley in St Moritz.
