Due to the Coronavirus situation, all Ski Club on snow activities, including Freshtracks holidays, Rep service and Instructor-Led Guiding are now cancelled for the season.
Alan loves most sporting activities but currently actively participates in running, sailing, flow boarding (coming 4th in the Masters category at the European Championships), indoor skydiving and snowsports. As well as being an active SCGB Rep, Alan is a qualified Alpine (ISIA), Adaptive, Telemark and Snowboard instructor and an Alpine (race) and Snowboard (freestyle) coach as well as a Masters racer and EMS-certified ski tourer. However he especially looks forward to skiing alongside SCGB members due to the shared passion for skiing and the common determination to have a great time!
I first skied at Glenshee on a fine Scottish winter’s day in 1982 and was immediately hooked. Luckily for me, during the early eighties I lived in Rome and spent many happy weekends skiing with friends in the easily accessible resorts of the Abruzzi mountains. I love Italian style, culture and language and travel there as often as I can. I have also been fortunate to live overseas in India and Egypt. For most of my career I worked as a government press officer, first at the Scottish Office and then at Energy and Trade and Industry. I am relatively new to the Ski Club of Great Britain having joined through Mountain Tracks, my favourite ski touring holiday company. I am very much looking forward to skiing with many of you over the coming seasons.
Life long outdoors enthusiast. Telemarker and keen road cyclist. Exploration Geophysicist for over 30 years having worked in a number of locations globally. Just enjoy sharing the mountains with like minded folk.
Before I discovered skiing winter seemed so depressing. On a whim I signed up for lessons at the Rossendale dry slope. A year later I skied in the mountains for the first time. Wow, how could it be simultaneously warm in the sun AND snowy? That was more than 30 years ago but I still get that same sense of wonder on blue sky days. What has changed is technique and equipment. I can remember up-unweighting, down-unweighting and lift queue waiting, to name a few. Now we just roll on to those edges. For me the Club is all about meeting people for skiing and for the all-important apres-ski debrief. I’ve skied most large European resorts and a fair number in North America. The most obscure has to be the Arizona Snowbowl! I try to keep fit by cycling, circuit training and hill walking. In the summer I enjoy motorcycle touring. I love walking in the Alps particularly in the Italian Dolomites. I’ve recently come back to the joys of sailing, this time on a flotilla yacht rather than in a dinghy.
I've skied around 150 resorts in Europe, North America and Asia, love skiing sunny pistes, deep fresh powder in the trees or ski touring in remote wilderness such as Spitsbergen, Greenland or Yellowstone National Park in the US. The Ski Club has provided me opportunities and challenges and I’ve been privileged to enjoy fantastic skiing with a huge number of members and it’s always good to see familiar faces and to make new friends. I love the mountains, snow, wildlife and true wilderness and have spent time in both the Antarctic and Arctic and am always looking for the next wilderness experience. I’ve joined multiple conservation holidays in places such as the Altai Republic and Kyrgyzstan conducting research into the snow leopard, its habitat and environment. This winter I’ll be following a family of Eagle Hunters in Mongolia on a 100 mile winter migration with over 1000 reindeer! I look forward to sharing some great skiing with members.
I have loved skiing since school lessons at Hillend and day trips to Glenshee- and since then lots of great holidays with family and friends in Europe, USA and NZ.
In recent years I have been a ski club Leader in Zermatt and Chamonix, and am looking forward to continuing in these resorts as a Rep.
More recently I have enjoyed ski touring as an entirely different experience.
When not skiing I enjoy running, golf, cycling.
Ski Leader/ Rep since 2015
Skiing has been my passion since being introduced to the sport in Andermatt at the age of 3. I Have been a Ski Club “rep” since the 70's and been both a Freshtracks and resort leader in many different places. I love skiing off-piste when I can but just being on snow with others who enjoy the mountains, preferably in the sun, is fine by me. After skiing I head back to a fairly busy retired life on the Isle of Arran
I love being in the mountains, the skiing, the scenery, the light.,the atmosphere and ambiance of alpine villages.
Skiing is such a fantastic sport, exhilarating and exciting and yet sociable. It can be challenging, pushing yourself to tackle that gnarly couloir, or maybe taking it easy just cruising , enjoying the view and thinking about that lovely lunch spot.
My skiing experience is enhanced by sharing with like minded and passionate Ski club members.
For many years I was a ski club member before I became a leader. I really get a kick out of meeting new people and old friends and sharing the fun.
My favourite resort is Zermatt. It has everything, the only downside being the expense.
Outside of skiing I enjoy photography, golf , dancing, classic cars and motorbikes.
For a crust I run a residential property company.
I really look forward to meeting you on the slopes.
Welcome! I am very fortunate to have 24 consecutive years experience of representing the Ski Club in Zermatt where I have spent more than 550 very memorable days ....and nights!!
Zermatt is a truly fantastic place and I really enjoy telling people about all its charms! It's combination of:... stunning scenery, amazing on and off-piste skiing, beautiful mountain restaurants and buzzing night life with great live music... are to me, unbeatable! It has a special family connection for me too, as my parents honeymooned there ....many many years ago.
Please come and see me to find out more!
One request! To let me know that you're in resort, please register via the Website.
Our Social Hour will be every night, from 6:30, including Saturdays, in the Chami Bar at the Hotel Pollux. Please pop by for a chat.
Been skiing since a schoolboy and love it as much now as when I first started.
Having done instruction, racing, snowboarding and ski ballet over the years, these days I prefer to ski off piste wherever safely possible, and enjoy the freedom that brings to exploring much more of the mountains.
Having wandered the world with a backpack for several years in my 20’s, I found myself staying with friends in the French Alps one winter with nothing much planned and simply fell in love with everything about the “skiing lifestyle”. Doing everything I could to prolong the visit – including washing thousands of pans, shoveling tons of snow and living in a broom cupboard! – I realised I was hooked.
Alas, real life intervened and back to Blighty to pursue a career in IT, with skiing trips a much longed-for highlight.
A lovely FreshTracks week with an awesome Ski Club Rep and local guide persuaded me to have a go at the Rep. course myself and, well, here I am!
I am keen on most mountain sports, but apart from skiing I love to hike, canoe, paraglide, climb Via Ferrata, and ride my bikes - both pedal and powered.
Skiing is my favourite sport, but any excuse to be in the mountains is good! I learned to ski in Scotland, so the bigger mountains and generally better weather of the Alps is always a treat. After years of family ski holidays with my four children, I joined Ski Club. I really appreciate being able to ski with others of a similar standard, and using local guides to access the best available off piste routes. I've been lucky enough to Lead in Zermatt in previous years. Whether in Zermatt or elsewhere, I'm looking forward to Repping this season: there's usually quite a few people I've skied with before, and some new folks - a good formula!
I learnt to ski and climb whilst at school in Snowdonia and have been a passionate skier ever since. I worked three seasons for ski Thomson and since then have spent as much time as possible in the mountains in between running my clothing business.
I am also a member of the Kandahar ski club and am a keen amateur racer competing in club races, the AICC and the Inferno. My biggest passion though is off piste. I love meeting new and old friends and helping them get the most out of their skiing holidays.
