The pretty resort of Galtür sits at the head of the Ischgl valley and is firmly a family favourite thanks to its wealth of off slope activities.

For some the 43km of local slopes may prove somewhat limited,

but the snowsure ski area is varied and Ischgl is just a quick, free bus ride away if you’re looking for more extensive slopes.

Although some good tough terrain can be found off the Breitspitzbahn gondola, the resort really markets itself as a family friendly ski area – there is a great beginner zone at the base and six specific fun areas aimed at families further up the hill.

Galtür is usually home to some of Austria’s most reliable early season snow.

On the Slopes

Galtür’s slopes only cover 43km, but within that there is some good variety and all can accessed by fast lifts. The beginner zone at the base of the mountain is excellent and in the form of the six “Adventure Land” features across the mountain, progression for young ones on to fun and longer runs is very good.

Early intermediates will enjoy the local slopes, but keener skiers and boarders will want to make sure they catch the bus to Ischgl and explore the vast network of blues and reds there.

For advanced skiers and riders head over to the Breitspitzbahn or bring your touring gear – Galtür acts as a perfect springboard to some of the region’s best and most accessible ski touring.

In the Resort

Galtür is a charming peaceful traditional village at the head of the valley near Ischgl. Sunnier, cheaper and much quieter than it’s larger neighbour, Galtür matches the image you have of a traditional Austrian village. It serves as a good base for a quiet family holiday or mixed-ability groups – and the free buses to Ischgl are regular and quick.
Off the slopes there is loads to do and a big network of scenic winter walking trails and cross country tracks is a major attraction. This, combined with an excellent sports centre make it an attractive base for families and mixed groups that contain non-skiers.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
