Nendaz: A Quieter Way to Ski the 4 Vallées

Nendaz sits at the heart of Switzerland’s largest linked ski area, the 4 Vallées, with more than 400km of pistes connecting Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon. It’s a useful base for exploring the wider area, from the local slopes to the high-altitude terrain around Mont-Fort.

Travelling outside the busiest holiday weeks can bring quieter slopes and better-value accommodation, making January, March and April worth considering for skiers with flexible dates.

Mont-Fort: skiing at 3,330 metres

At 3,330m, Mont-Fort is the high point of the 4 Vallées, with a panorama that takes in the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and, on a clear day, 20 summits above 4,000m. It’s a view worth making the trip for, even if you have no intention of skiing back down.

For those who do, the descent is a serious one: a challenging black run dropping away from the summit into the high-alpine terrain below, with steep, demanding skiing from the outset.

Another way to take in the landscape is via the Mont-Fort zipline, which runs for 1.4km towards the Col des Gentianes, reaching speeds of more than 100km/h.

Why ski Nendaz outside peak periods?

January, March and April each offer a different reason to consider a trip outside the busiest holiday weeks. January brings midwinter skiing, while March and April have longer days and more daylight to make the most of time on the mountain. Snow and weather conditions vary, particularly later in the season, but the higher terrain of the 4 Vallées gives you options.

Travelling outside school holidays can also mean quieter lifts and pistes, as well as better-value accommodation or ski-pass offers. Prices vary by date, so it’s worth comparing packages before booking.

A base for exploring the 4 Vallées

A week in Nendaz leaves plenty of scope to explore the 4 Vallées without having to plan every day in advance. You can follow the weather, the snow and the mood of the group, deciding each morning how far to venture.
