Forecast today: Occasional snow
The resort consists of three villages called Chamrousse 1650, Chamrousse 1700 and Chamrousse 1750. Many of the apartment blocks in Chamrousse 1750 that were previously concrete blocks have been recently rebuilt into something more sightly, bringing them more in line with the more attractive, traditional buildings in Chamrousse 1650. The ski area stretches from 1400m to 2250m and has 90km of pistes and 19 lifts. The west-facing nature of the resort guarantees both excellent snow and afternoon and evening sun. In order to make it easy to travel between the villages, there is a free shuttle bus.
Chamrousse 1700 and 1750 provide excellent skiing for beginners and intermediates. Chamrousse 1700 has a beginners area with a collection of green and blue runs and Chamrousse 1750 features mainly blue runs which can be accessed by the chairlifts from the village. These runs cut through the forest and have views over Grenoble, making for a picturesque setting. It is also home to the Sunset Park which includes, amongst other things, jumps and a bordercross track. The terrain above Chamrousse 1650 is steep and varied and is made up of seven black runs and seven red runs, making it perfect for advanced skiers. The area is also home to the famous four-kilometre long men’s downhill course and the challenging Casserousse Couloir which provides over 850 metres of vertical ski descent. In total there are more than 90km of pistes in Chamrousse across 43 runs. There are also 37km of cross-country trails.
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Chamrousse has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Updated 10/02
An incredibly snowy – stupidly snowy – absurdly snowy – – week begins for the French Alps, as a series of low pressure areas sweep in from Scandinavia, over the North Sea and British Isles, before hitting the continent and the Alps hard. Snow is already falling on Tuesday where around 20cm is expected down across higher ground. Overnight this picks up, and significant snowfall will fall on Wednesday with around 2ft expected down – the freezing line is hovering around 1,500m, meaning most of this will hit lower slopes but overnight snowfall will reach all slopes.
On Thursday things will begin to turn stupid: a metre (100cm) of snowfall is expected down over the French Alps, hitting most slopes as the freezing line drops to around 1,000m. Higher winds can be expected on this day as well.
The avalanche risk will increase dramatically over the course of the coming days, thanks to this new snowfall and sitting on a persistent weak layer. In places, this is already forecasted to hit Level 5 on the European scale, the highest available, indicating extraordinarily high risk of extreme slides. You should not be travelling away from protected pistes of infrastructure during this time, and expect large areas of the resort to be closed as avalanche mitigation takes place.
Snowfall continues into Friday, with the tailend of this storm bringing another foot across Friday and Saturday. The weather is suggesting it might clear on Sunday, with fine, dry and bright conditions forecasting, meaning Sunday should be the day to chase powder, although you should continue to check and plan your off piste travel carefully.
