The sun was shining brightly on the Austrian Alps on Friday, with yet more sunny weather expected over the weekend. For the best conditions, head high and stick to the southern parts of the country where the most snow fell throughout November.
Conditions are particularly good in Sölden and Obergurgl, but thanks to a mammoth snowmaking effort, Ischgl has the most terrain open anywhere in Austria – 185km of slopes and all but two of the main lifts were spinning.
Further east in the lower resorts of the Tirol and Salzburgerland, more snow is needed to open up terrain. Snowmaking has helped, but only 38km of slopes were open in the vast Ski Welt on Friday.
The great news is that a good deal of snow is forecast to fall on Monday and then throughout the whole of next week. The heaviest snow is set to fall in the northern mountains where it is needed most, where around 50cm is possible by the middle of the week.
