The resort is a quiet, family-friendly base on the edge of the Madonna di Campiglio ski area.

Folgarida’s local slopes are a nice mixture of blues and reds, but more advanced skiers will enjoy the steeper terrain on the Monte Spinale side of Madonna. A modern lift system links the resort to the rest of the ski area – indeed several new lifts have been built recently. And of course as we’re in the Dolomites you get that fantastic combination of spectacular scenery and great food.

On the Slopes

As mentioned, the local slopes are ideal for beginners. There is a small beginner zone on the outskirts of town and another up the gondola at Malghet Aut. Above this there is great progression on to longer blues around Monte Spolverino. Intermediates will love the well-groomed and snowsure (the snowmaking system is very impressive) slopes that link Folgarida to Madonna – there’s almost 120km of them for you.

For a Dolomite resort, the Madonna ski area has more tough terrain than average – 22% of the pistes are rated black. The best are on Monte Spinale, but there are also good challenges more locally towards Marilleva. In good snow, the off piste can be excellent, particularly in the open bowls which can fill with powder after fresh snowfall.

In the Resort

Folgarida is a quiet, small resort with all the purpose-built convenience that you may have encountered before in France. Despite being purpose built, the resort is attractive as it’s been carefully designed to be in keeping with the traditional roots of the village and is under strict instruction from the surrounding national parks that no structures rise above the treeline.
This makes it an ideal family holiday destination, especially as it is located well away from the bustle of Madonna – don’t come here expecting raucous après.
However, the best place to finish the day on the mountain is the shared terraces of the bars in Malghet Aut where you can rest your legs in a deckchair before heading down the mountain.

Getting to Folgarida

Verona is the nearest airport, with the transfer taking around two hours. Venice and Bergamo are other options – the transfer from both takes around three hours.

Italy will barely benefit from the Nordstau conditions dominating through the middle of this week across the rest of the Alps, sitting as it does on the wrong side (for perhaps the first time this season) of the Main Alpine Ridge. It will not be without cold and snow, however, as the same cold conditions do make it over the Alps; in msot palces the freezing line drops from above 2,000m early this week to seas level by close of play on Thursday.

A few flurries will make it through; the best of this will be on higher ground closer to the ridge, with around 20cm expected down at Cervinia over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. This will be reduced to a few flurries in the Via Lattea or over the Dolomites.

A brief burst of sunshine follows for many areas, before the last few tails of cloud bring with them some more snow into the new week; it remains too early to tell exactly when and where this will fall, and how much, but the southwest seems to be getting the best of it.
