Snow overview for Japan

22 January 2020

Japan’s uncharacteristic lack of snow has unfortunately continued well into the New Year despite hope of fresh snow post-Christmas. Most regions have received far less snowfall than usual but one notable exception is the northern Tohuku region which has received close to normal amounts of snowfall.

Despite the early season gloom, the signs of a turnaround are appearing with the Arctic Oscillation that has been bringing warm air into the region, predicted to subside in the next couple of weeks. On Saturday over 50cm of snow fell overnight on the upper slopes of Niseko, further snow fell on Wednesday and a further 11cm is expected over the next 3 days. Hakuba and Rusutsu will also see a smattering of new snow over the next few days.
