Engelberg may not have the extensive slope mileage of some larger resorts, but what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality.

The lift-served off piste potential is vast, especially with the world renowned Laub freeride route, and its position right on the northern edge of the Alps means it frequently gets hammered during snowstorms. And, although the biggest attraction is the off piste, the snowsure pistes also serve up some great terrain for beginner or intermediate skiers. The resort is more of a small town and, as a result there, is good variety when it comes to accommodation. Its grand Victorian hotels have been joined by chalet-style buildings, concrete blocks and new apartment buildings right next to the gondola.

By far the best way to make the most of Engelberg’s incredible terrain is with Ski Club Freshtracks. There are seven off piste holidays heading out to the resort this winter, between January and March.

On the Slopes

The main ski area on the Titlis mountain is a paradise for off piste skiers. Classic descents including the Laub and Galtiberg consistently rank amongst the world’s top off piste runs, but a guide is highly recommended. There are also decent beginner facilities above Gerschinalp, but intermediates will find the extent of the pistes limited.

In the Resort

The resort is more of a town than a village so there are great amenities and the scenery is spectacular as it is surrounded by towering peaks. It is generally a relaxed and quiet resort – most people come here for the serious skiing and not the partying. Off the slopes there is a lot to do, including a well-maintained and popular network of cross country trails.

For Families

Although the beginner zones are located up the hill, they are good and sunny – ideal for younger children. As a quiet resort this is a good option and the Swiss ski school has a good reputation, meaning you can head off to explore the off piste whilst your children learn.

For Après

This is not a real après resort, but the Chalet bar at the base of the Titlis Express gondola has a popular happy hour and is the place to go once the lifts close. In town, a lot of the action is based in hotel bars, but Yucatan and the Hoheneck bar are both popular.

Getting to Engelberg

Engelberg is very accessible and is close to Zürich airport. The drive takes under an hour and a half, whilst the train is only a little longer – it takes about two hours. The drive from Basel is a little longer but the train journey is just as quick as from Zürich.

Engelberg operates a dynamic pricing system, with different days priced differently depending on popularity – this means each day of your six day lift pass might cost you a different amount when broken down into individual days! Unlike some other resorts, this dynamic pricing is fixed in advance and won’t fluctuate based on demand. Good snowfall is due for much of Switzerland over the coming week, as a large and strong storm system moves in over much of the Western Alps. Temperatures will peak briefly through the middle of this period as the freezing line climbs from 1,500m to 2,000m, although this will fall again as the week continues eventually hitting sea level by the weekend.

Snow is already falling on Tuesday, with around 15cm expected down over Tuesday evening and into Wednesday. Serious snowfall will then arrive on Thursday, with around 20cm expected down across the region; this will hit most slope elevations as the freezing line dips back below 1,500m. From Friday, things will slow down, albeit a further few flurries are expected on Saturday. Sunday will dawn cold, dry and bright, making for potentially excellent riding conditions with the new snow having had time to settle and the avalanche risk time to calm down.

More snow is then expected in the new week, potentially continuing the idiocy.
