The two flights required (usually via Denver) to get to this corner of Wyoming are more than worth it.

2500 acres of some of North America’s, if not the world’s, finest and gnarliest terrain await, including the legendary runs from the top of Jackson Hole’s iconic Tram – none more so than Corbet’s Couloir. The resort does also have a more mellow side to it and offers some great groomed terrain for confident intermediates and more recently for beginners, thanks to the Sweetwater Gondola.

On the Slopes

Jackson Hole is right up there amongst the world’s top resorts for experts.

Double diamond blacks, powder bowls and epic tree runs are littered across the mountain, all accessed by a network of fast lifts that deliver some serious vertical. That being said, there are also some great pistes that often remain in immaculate condition whilst many of the resort’s clientele hit the powder off the sides.

For Beginners

Despite the resort’s hardcore reputation, the offering for beginners has improved markedly since the construction of the Sweetwater Gondola, as well as Solitude Station with 12,000 square feet of ski schools, rental shops and restaurants. Gentle runs drop from the mid station of this lift and add to the area by the Teewinot Quad. Progression on to longer blues is relatively smooth – we’d recommend moving to Apres Vous Mountain first.

For Intermediates

The centre of the mountain is criss-crossed by a network of blues, many of which are regularly groomed to provide a good selection of terrain for intermediates. Lots of vertical can be clocked up, with over 800m available from the top of the Bridger Gondola and well over 1000m from the top of the Sublette Quad. In addition, few places are better to make the first foray into off piste skiing than Jackson Hole – the snow is usually very light and the trees are great for bad visibility.

For Advanced/Expert & Off Piste

If you’re looking for a challenge then you’ve come to the right place. From the top of the Tram on Rendezvous Mountain, a whole mountain of blacks, open powder fields, steep gullies and tree runs awaits, dropping over 1200m in one go. Few resorts can rival this combination. If this then wasn’t enough, then gated terrain on the ridge – accessed by bootpack from the top of the Bridger Gondola or the Teton Quad – is world-class steep terrain in its own right. Throw in numerous other bowls and over 11.5m of snow each winter, and it is clear why Jackson Hole is famed for its expert terrain.

In the Resort

There are two options to choose from – the ski-in-ski-out Teton Village at the base of the lifts or the town of Jackson, a twenty minute drive away. Whilst the former is more convenient and hosts the Ski Club Rep’s social hour, the latter is more vibrant and retains a wild west flavour. Expect saloons with swing doors, bars with live music and some decent food options.

For Families

For children the beginner slopes are right at the foot of the mountain, where the Kids Ranch is also located – a 20,000 sq foot facility designed specifically for kids – right in the middle of the action. Elsewhere, most off slope activities are generally located within the major hotels, but there is now an ice rink located in the heart of Teton Village and wildlife tours of the National Parks can be arranged.

For Après

The renowned Mangy Moose is the focus of après-ski activity at Teton Village and often plays host to live music. To meet with other Ski Club members, the Alpenhof Bar is the place to be for an après drink. Down in town, the Pink Garter is popular on Friday and Saturday nights, whilst the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar gets lively later and the Stagecoach Bar is one for a Sunday night live music.

Getting to Jackson Hole

The only way to really get to Jackson is to take a connecting flight to its local airport – no one flies direct from the UK. Flying via Denver is usually the preferred option, although connections via Salt Lake City are available too. Once at the airport, the transfer to the resort take only half an hour or so.

Prices for Jackson Hole lift passes vary considerably throughout the year as the resort employs semi-dynamic pricing, meaning ticket prices vary by expected demand – unlike some other resorts, these are fixed in advance and shouldn’t change closer to the time. The below prices indicate the minimum and maximum you may be expected to pay throughout the year.

Jackson Hole continues to employ it’s COVID-era strategy of limiting walk-up daily pass sales; it is therefore strongly recommend to order in advance (where you stand to save a few pence, too). Holders of the Mountain Collective and Ikon passes must register their visits in advance – whilst this is optional in many resorts, it is essential for Jackson Hole.

Temperatures remain comparatively high on the Left Coast as their poor start to the season continues. The freezing line will sit around midmountain level at most places across the PNW, Frontier Ranges and Tetons, demonstrating how widespread this bad start is. Things do turn colder as the weekend approaches, and with it a few flurries of snowfall, but nothing much to write home about.

The Ice Coast continues to experience bitterly cold conditions, with daytime highs of -18°C (-3°F) expected in parts at times. Flurries of snow will be found overnight, meaning tracks should hopefully freshen up for the new day!
