What was already an excellent ski area – comprising 152km of linked slopes with neighbouring La Rosière in France – is only getting better due to significant recent investment.
In 2018/19, two new fast six-pack chairlifts were built up Mont Valaisan to open up a fantastic area of off piste, as well as five new red runs. This has added more advanced terrain to the ski area, which is one of the most varied in the Aosta Valley and is renowned for holding on to great snow conditions due to its northerly orientation. In addition to this, the scenery is stunning and includes views of the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Mont Blanc.
The former mining town has expanded tastefully and the old centre is attractive. New developments have spread along the valley, but most accommodation is located within an easy walk from the Bosco Express or the Les Suches gondola. Food options are excellent and there are some cosy bars, all which boast affordable prices – it is certainly cheaper here than over in France.

Pros and cons
- Varied, cross-border ski area, with some tough runs
- New Mont Valaisan sector is excellent for off piste
- The village is a great, relaxing base and very affordable
- Resort return runs are challenging – less confident skiers will want to download the gondola
- Relatively limited terrain here for beginners
- Storms can close the link across to France
On the Slopes
The 152km of snowsure slopes offer something for almost everyone, with the only thing lacking a good network of gentle blues for beginners and less confident intermediates. The local terrain is fantastic for intermediates upwards and the slopes on the Italian side are definitely steeper than their French counterparts. Good on piste challenges can be found on piste 3 (F. Berthod) and on piste 5 (Muret), which drop steeply through the trees towards the resort.
In the Resort
As with La Rosière, La Thuile’s location makes it relatively quiet during the winter months. It is tucked away deep into the Aosta Valley, meaning fewer weekend visitors drop in, making the resort a relaxed and peaceful place. That being said, there are some cosy bars for an après ski drink and a number of good restaurants – here you get the benefit of both French and Italian cuisine.
Try and base yourself near the lifts if possible to make your stay as convenient as it can be. And don’t worry, the walk from here into town or for drinks and dinner is not a long one. The lift pass includes two days in other Aosta resorts – buses run to nearby Courmayeur and Pila is nearby.
Getting to La Thuile
You can either fly into Geneva and then drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel, or drive up the Aosta Valley from Turin. Both trips take around two hours.
