Forecast today: Mainly fair
A lot of accommodation is provided by smart hotels, but don’t let this put you off as there are also options to suit most budgets.
The skiing is split into three main sectors, all of which are easily accessible from the edges of town – with a decent bus service linking the respective base stations. The slopes at Le Jaillet are generally quieter, especially if you head all the way across to La Giettaz, Mont d’Arbois is the main hub and has the link to the slopes above St Gervais, whilst Rochebrune has another pleasant pod of tree-lined slopes.
If you’re an adventurous skier or boarder, purchase the Evasion Mont Blanc ski pass to also ski at Les Contamines or the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass to get you access to nearby Chamonix and Courmayeur over in Italy.
The resort is home to some great beginner facilities, located just above the village at the foot of the Mont d’Arbois gondola. Long greens and gentle blues are then available across the ski area, but the top to bottom green at Rochebrune in particular is very good. Much of the rest of the ski area is ideal for intermediate skiers, with a network of blues and reds linking up to ensure you can cover some serious ground each ski day. For the quietest slopes head towards La Giettaz or down to La Combloux. Note that getting around can be hampered somewhat by a creaking lift system – recent investment has helped but more fast chairs and gondolas are needed.
More advanced skiers and snowboarders may find the challenges limited here and you’ll be waiting for fresh snowfall to head off piste and into the trees. If the snow clouds haven’t delivered then head to Mont Joly above St Gervais or to the Cote 2000 sector for some steeper groomed pistes. Tougher terrain is available at nearby Les Contamines or of course in Chamonix – just make sure you purchase the right lift pass upgrades.
Despite its large size, Megève retains a charming, old core and most of the hotels and chalets have been developed in a tasteful, wooden style. The main street is home to lots of smart shops, some excellent restaurants and bars – many of which do become lively at weekends as people make the most of the short transfer from Geneva.
Up on the hill, there are some fantastic mountain restaurants, although you will need to book in advance during busy weeks at the most popular locations.
Away from the skiing there is a lot to do, with some excellent shopping in town, tobogganing on the hill and winter walking through the valley.
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Megève has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Updated 17/02
Strong snowfall continues into this week after last week’s incredible numbers – with the avalanche risk remaining very high as a result, with Level 4 (High) and Level 5 (Very High) dominating across the French Alps. Around 25cm of snowfall is coming down on Tuesday with flurries continuing into Wednesday, with cloud and obscured conditions in play. This will reach most elevations as the freezing line remains close to 1,000m throughout, taking a long walk off a short pier overnight as it hits sea level.
Another large snowfall is due on Thursday, continuing to bring excellent snow but maintaining this avalanche cycle – this new snow is sitting on a persistent weak layer dating from December that has been causing issues all winter, and remains a severe risk now.
Temperatures remain cold, with the freezing line holding fast at around 1,500m. This means that around 70cm of snowfall will hit upper slopes, with decent totals of 20cm reaching lower slopes, too.
Cloud clears – as does the snow – over Friday and into Saturday, meaning those of you still skiing may well experience amazing conditions now that this new loading of snow has had a chance to sinter and bind to the layers below; although with a persistent weak layer in play this will remain dangerous for some time.
Conditions take a marked turn towards spring, with sun during the day and cold temperatures overnight, creating a distinct freeze-thaw cycle.
