but via Plan-du-Fou there is direct access to Switzerland’s largest linked ski area and some of the world’s finest off piste terrain. Nendaz itself is surprisingly big and there is a great range of accommodation to choose from – most of which is significantly cheaper than over the hill in Verbier and many have a stunning view of the Rhône Valley.
Easy access from Geneva makes this a great resort for a weekend getaway.
The local slopes above Nendaz are great for beginners and above the village at Tracouet there are several drags serving short, easy blues. Progression on to longer blues is good, but the resort return run can become crowded at the end of the day. Intermediates will enjoy the longer reds and more confident skiers should head up to Plan-du-Fou and take on the long red down to Siviez – just note the return is much more difficult and you’ll want to download the cable car.
The Prarion-Plan du Fou gondola connects Prarion to the Plan du Fou and allows skiers to reach Siviez from Haute-Nendaz. The new gondola has tripled the lift capacity which is great news as this is a busy part of the lift system and could previously get crowded.
Experts should immediately fan out and see what the entire 4 Vallées has to offer. Most of the area’s extensive steep runs above Verbier are classified as itineraries – they are marked and are avalanche controlled, but they are not maintained or patrolled – so you should not ski them alone. If open, after fresh snow these routes are spectacular but they do become increasingly challenging as the moguls build in the days after a snowfall.
Nendaz is a sprawling place, and the centre can be busy with traffic at times.
Most of the resort is modern but built in traditional chalet style, and an old core remains, with quaint houses and barns alongside great views across the Rhône valley. Alongside this there are no shortage of bars, shops and restaurants – all of which are less severe on the wallet than across in Verbier.
Away from the slopes there is one of the best networks of winter walking and snowshoeing trails in Switzerland. Cross country skiing is also popular, whilst in town there is an ice rink, fitness centre, climbing wall and squash courts.

Updated 24/03
the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.
With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.
Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.
Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.
