Forecast today: Generally clear
The terrain is above the tree-line and favours beginner and intermediate skiers, but there is some good off piste to explore for more advanced skiers. Obergurgl is one of the most popular resorts with Ski Club members and Ski Club holidays to the resort usually sell out well in advance so make sure to get booking early! Our Ski Club Rep Service will be operating in Obergurgl this season. Join the Rep for a drink during the nightly social hour at the Hotel Edelweiss and Gurgl between December and April this season. Find our Reps on the Ski Club App, home of all things Obergurgl this winter and the best place to organise your day’s skiing!
The village itself is the highest parish in Austria and has retained a lot of its traditional charm. It is split into three parts, one by the Rosskarbahn, the other by the Festkogelbahn and the third – named Hochgurgl – lies 200m higher up the Timmelsjoch road. Obergurgl is generally pretty quiet, but there is a good selection of restaurants and bars and a couple of lively spots for an après drink.
The high-altitude ski area tends to have some of the best snow conditions in the Alps and is always one of the first to open and last to close. This is not a resort for experts, but it is ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers.
There’s 110km of slopes on offer, served by 23 lifts – almost all of which are fast – and wherever you’re staying its going to be ski-in-ski-out.
Obergurgl is ideal for beginners. There are two lifts that are free for anyone in ski school and there are three other beginner lifts (covered by a special day pass) serving decent slopes at each end of Obergurgl, and also just above Hochgurgl. From there the blue under the Hohe Mut gondola is ideal for progression and more confident beginners should be able to tackle some of the gentle blues above Hochgurgl.
The terrain is also ideal for intermediates and the snow conditions are usually first class. The network of blues above Hochgurgl are slightly more gentle, but are wide and ideal for perfecting your technique. For clocking up the most vertical, head to the top of the Wurmkogel chair or the Plattachbahn. Hopping between the two sides of the mountain is easy, just catch the Top-Express gondola.
There are few challenges on piste and the black runs are not particularly steep. Wait for fresh snow and make the most of the off piste – which often remains untracked for longer than in many resorts. The toughest runs are off the top of the second section of the Hohe Mut Bahn.
The mainly traffic-free village centre is relaxed and very family friendly.
That being said, it is not completely quiet and there are some good restaurants and bars, although most are linked to hotels and much of the action happens at the end of the ski day rather than late at night.
With its reputation as a family-friendly resort, the options and facilities for children are great. The ski school has very good reviews and they also provide lunchtime supervision. Off the slopes the safe location is great for snow play, the ice rink is always popular and there is a 3km tobogganing route over at Hochgurgl.
Obergurgl is most animated as the lifts start closing, before quietening down significantly in the late evening. Nederhütte at the Hohe Mut gondola mid- station is the place to be when the lifts close and is a frequent stop for Ski Club members utilising the Rep Service. From here you ski down and can also drop in at the popular bars at the base of the lift.

Updated 02/05
The weekend starts mild across the region, with the freezing line ticking up to 4,000m. This sits under a layer of cloud cover, which will bring with it precipitation; this will fall as snow in many areas, as the freezing line drops from this peak as low as 1,500m over the course of the weekend.
Western areas will see around 12cm of snow, with easterly and southern areas seeing perhaps a foot on Monday along, with another 10cm before and after. This will remain across higher ground, as the freezing line doesn’t dip below 2,000m during this snowy period.
Unsettled conditions continue over the course of this week, with more snow on the way in parts.
Thus concludes our snow overviews for the 2024/25 season; thank you to everyone who has tuned in, and we look forward to seeing you again next season!
Our Reps service in Obergurgl will conclude for the season on 5 April 2025; this is different from dates advertised in a recent edition of SKI Magazine, for which the Club apologises for any inconvenience caused.
Your Ski Club Reps are in resort for one reason only; to help you discover better skiing. They are your personal resort gurus, with years of experience skiing here and around the world, who will bring you and your fellow Members together to conquer the mountain! Stay up to date with everything in resort, find the best spots for an après beer, and ski to your hearts content.
Our Reps will be in resort between 6 December 2025 and 3 April 2026, skiing six days a week – Reps’ day off/changeover day is Saturday in this resort. Log your upcoming trip to Obergurgl now via the “My Trips” function on the Ski Club App to let your Rep know when you’ll be in resort. View contact details, meeting times & points, and social hour details now.
The Ski Club is pleased to confirm that two Reps will be active in this resort peak weeks from late January to early March to provide our Members with the best possible service – exact details are to be confirmed in due course.
Life long outdoors enthusiast. Telemarker and keen road cyclist. Exploration Geophysicist for over 30 years having worked in a number of locations globally. Just enjoy sharing the mountains with like minded folk.
Just seems like yesterday but it was 20 years ago I started repping for the Ski Club. So many wonderful memories. I am fortunate to ski for a fair amount each winter, pretty much always in Zermatt and Obergurgl and a few different resorts each season. As much as I love skiing, I do like to combine with stops at great mountain restaurants. Rest assured there is always time for a coffee and cake stop, especially when as wonderful as the attached photo.
Despite living close to several North American ski resorts (doh), I didn’t catch the ski bug until my thirties after I returned to the UK.
I tell everyone I meet that skiing is the best form of meditation ever (try thinking about work problems hurtling down a black run), and it’s the most fun you can have on two legs (legally)!
Skiing is a lifelong journey of learning and subtle improvements. All while meeting interesting people who are up for a good time—what’s not to love?
I skied for many years with Ski Club in various resorts and on ‘Freshtracks’ holidays, but it never dawned on me to become a rep until last season when someone asked, ‘off the cuff’ – “Dave, why aren’t you a rep”? So here I am. I look forward to meeting you soon and sharing our love for this fantastic sport.
I first fell in love with skiing in my teens with like-minded school friends, and I still ski with them some 40 years later. I enjoy any form of skiing, especially socially with others who share a love the mountains. I live in Suffolk, I am recently retired and have three boys and a lovely lady at home.
It was great to be back on skis last season and one of my trips was to Obergurgl. Super high-altitude resort so I am delighted to be going back as the resort rep this season. I am also running a Freshtracks holiday at Sils Maria (St Moritz) in March. I still live between the French vineyards near Bergerac and Eastbourne in UK, and I am currently researching a part-time PhD at Kings College London on the First World War.
I was lucky enough to start skiing at the age of 11 and was hooked from the outset. I love the sense of freedom I find in the mountains and particularly enjoy heading off-piste on a sunny day. Any ski experience is enhanced by who you share it with and I look forward to meeting new friends with SCGB. I am a retired GP but now spend my time enjoying life; travelling with my family, playing average golf and skiing whenever possible!
I learnt to ski in Scotland age 7 and have skied with family and friends all over Europe. My kids are now at University – so I can ski more! My favourite runs are the wide black pistes at Hogegga in Trysil – groomed in the morning and bumpy by the afternoon, but I get equal pleasure from bouncing in fresh powder snow and am looking forward to sharing this joy with other keen skiers. In my day job I am a knee surgeon in Somerset and enjoy cycling, occasional golf, and keeping control of two very busy cocker spaniels.
Anyone that knows Obergurgl will know where my profile picture was taken. This was Christmas Day 2019.
I first skied in Obergurgl in 1990 and have been back nearly every year since, sometimes more than once. I'm looking forward to leading a holiday there this year and look forward yo skiing with new friends.
I love to ski so that's good then. Looking forward to getting back on the snow and feeling European again!! Being a Rep to me means visiting great resorts, getting to know ski mad members and showing them a good time on the slopes. I like bumps, I like steeps and I love powder. Whether cruising blues or descending reds, there is nothing I like more than the happy look on members faces after a good day on the snow. Seems I have only managed 4 stars which is not bad but want to go for the 5 star approval this year ;-)! Always good to have a goal. I am looking forward to meeting ski friends old and new!
Love being in the mountains and by the sea! Living on the south coast I get one but have to travel to the other! So skiing has always been a big part of my life, and through the Ski Club I have been able to enjoy most of the resorts in Europe, plus a few in the USA. Love cruising the pistes and morning hot chocs just as much as the gnarly steep stuff, preferably n the company of a group of like-minded members! Long may it continue!
