This southern Colorado resort is famed for its tree-lined, steep terrain and remote location in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado.

The north-facing resort is home to fantastically varied terrain and with tree-lined slopes, making Purgatory a great place to be in stormy weather.

Although the San Juan Mountains catch less snow than further north, the snow is usually very reliable thanks to the altitude and improved snowmaking coverage. The expert terrain is a big attraction, particularly the steeps back in to town and the runs off the Legends Express lift.

The resort base has seen lots of improvements in recent years and now boasts a good selection of condo and hotel accommodation, much of which is located right at the foot of the slopes. Its location makes it quite hard to get to from the UK, requiring a long drive from Denver or an internal flight, but this means you should make the most of your trip by tying in a visit to the nearby resorts of Telluride and Silverton.
