Forecast today: Clear skies
It is however a short bus ride from the lifts so you may wish to stay a little up the valley at Inneralpbach.Linked since 2012 to the slopes of Auffach by a two-stage gondola, Alpbach is now home to 109km of slopes and ski routes and sits at the heart of the Ski Juwel region.
Most of these are rated blue and red, making this an intermediate’s paradise. However, there are also some great learning facilities and an excellent ski school with a longstanding reputation of teaching British skiers. An excellent ski bus service also links the resort to small areas of pistes at Reith (which are floodlit for night skiing) and Niederau.
Although Alpbach is home to a small beginner zone and a draglift, you’ll need to head to Inneralpbach or up to the Gmahkopf for the best beginner facilities.
These are excellent however, and there are several funslopes and kids runs to keep younger ones entertained. The rest of the linked ski area – on both sides of the Alpbachtal – are then suited best to intermediates and in good snow conditions, vertical descents of over 1000m are possible.
The small ski area further down the valley at Reith is served only by a gondola and a couple of drags, but its night skiing is a great attraction and is worth doing during your stay.
More advanced skiers and boarders should head across to Auffach and then catch the skibus to Niederau, where the best black runs and tree-skiing are located. If the snow is good, the steep descents down from the Lanerköpfel are a blast when freshly groomed or in powder conditions.
The historic centre, narrow streets, wooden chalets and beautiful tree-lined setting make Alpbach one of the prettiest resort towns in the Alps, let alone Austria. There are lots of family-run hotels and B&Bs offering traditional Austrian accommodation, but just be aware that you’ll need to catch a bus or drive to the lift base at Inneralpbach.
Off the slopes there is an excellent network of cross-country trails and winter walking routes through the valley. Up on the hill there are some very good mountain restaurants serving local specialities and considering it is a family friendly resort, some lively après ski spots at the foot of the lifts in Inneralpbach.
Getting here from Innsbruck is incredibly easy – the drive only takes an hour and you can also get the train to Brixlegg and then catch the bus up to the resort. Salzburg and Munich offer good alternatives – both are a two hour drive away from Alpbach.

Updated 17/02
Steady snowfall continues for much of Austria, helping relieve what has so-far been an historically bad season. Main ski areas to the west will receive around 20cm of snowfall across most elevations, helped as the freezing line plummets to sea level overnight into Wednesday. Flurries will continue throughout Wednesday with plenty of cloud around, and temperatures rising as the freezing line recovers to 2,000m.
Another belt of snow will come in over Thursday bringing around a foot of snow to areas across the country – north and south of the main alpine ridge. The freezing line will hover around 1,500m meaning upper elevations will get the best of this snow, but cool mornings and evenings will result in snow reaching most elevations.
Things remain cold as the week wraps up, with the threat of sunshine becoming stronger in easterly areas. Snow however continues well into the weekend, with sunday promising excellent skiing conditions across the region.
