Despite its size, there are very few British visitors that have ventured to the linked resorts of Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis
– most visitors to the vast network of slopes are German, Austrian or Dutch.
Most of the lifts are fast gondolas and quick, high capacity chairlifts, which serve a very varied network of slopes. There’s several excellent beginner zones, but particularly above Serfaus and on the edge of Fiss. The rest of the slopes are ideal for piste- hungry intermediates, whilst advanced and expert skiers will enjoy the blacks served by the Pezidbahn and the long steeps off the Zwölferkopf.
Each resort is different. Ladis is lower, smaller and slightly less conveniently located. Fiss is next up, with a compact centre of family-run hotels and holiday apartments, as well as a number of good restaurants and bars. Finally, Serfaus stretches along to the end of the valley road and is home to further accommodation and a couple of livelier spots for an end of the ski day drink. Off the slopes there’s a lot of cross country skiing in the area, several tobogganing routes and a number of winter walking trails, making this a good option for families or mixed groups containing non-skiers. Getting here is simple, with the drive from Innsbruck taking a little over an hour.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
