Silvretta Montafon incorporates 140km of slopes spread between two Austrian valleys, all linked by an increasingly modern and powerful lift system.

Most of the skiing can be found in the Hochjoch and Valisera areas, where there’s a great range of intermediate cruising above the tree line.

With some of the most scenic terrain in Austria, as well as some of the most extreme, this is a great area for freeriding and touring. Accommodation is mostly found in the three valley towns of Gaschurn, St Gallenkirch and Schruns, all of which are well linked to the ski area by modern gondolas.

On the Slopes

Most of the slopes are open blues and reds, located above the treeline, and these definitely suit intermediates best. Beginner facilities are not ideal, with the main zones located up the mountain at Kapelalpe and Valisera. For more advanced skiers and snowboarders there are some decent blacks by the Nova chair and beneath the Sennigrat chair.

The main attraction for more experienced snowsports enthusiasts is the lift served off piste, 27km of which is in the form of marked, but unpisted ski routes. Head to the top of the Burg draglift for R55 or to the Rinderhütte chair for R44. This is also one of the best resorts in Austria for ski touring and the lift system provides excellent access to numerous freeride routes.

In the Resort

There are three main towns to base yourself in – Shruns, St Gallenkirch and Gaschurn. Perhaps the most convenient base is St Gallenkirch as it sits in between the two main Hochjoch and Valisera ski areas, but Shruns and Gaschurn have a better choice of bars, restaurants and accommodation.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
