If you're looking for a large linked ski area, but don't want to break the bank,
the Les Sybelles ski area (linked with nearby La Toussuire) offers up 310km of pistes at a much cheaper price than its near neighbour the Three Valleys.
Three fast chairs serve a decent network of snowsure blues and reds above the resort base, before lifts (most of which are unfortunately slow) fan out towards La Toussuire or in the opposite direction towards St Sorlin d’Arves. There’s some longer runs off the ridgelines down to the villages, as well as some decent off piste if conditions allow. Snow reliability is usually good.
The resort itself is fairly brutal to look at, with high rise apartment blocks dominating the skyline. This does mean however that most accommodation is not only good value, but is centrally located right at the foot of the slopes – that convenience is worth the price of the resort aesthetics. Food and drink is cheaper than at most French resorts, plus you’ll save on things like ski hire too. Getting here is simple, with the drive up the Maurienne Valley taking around 2 hours from Geneva.

What must be the first Nordstau event of the year hits the Alps over the course of this week, bringing a return to winter conditions across much of the Northern French Alps. The freezing line will decline through the middle of this week, dropping close to sea level overnight Thursday into Friday.
At the same time, northerly unsettled conditions working their way in across Central and Eastern Europe brings snowfall to many areas north of the Briancon-Gap line. Over higher ground this could see as much as a foot-and-a-half through Wednesday evening and into Thursday; as the freezing line declines over this period, snow will work its way down to lower elevations, but the best conditions will remain above 2,000m.
A brief pause in the snowfall over Saturday still sees cloudy conditions dominating; a few more flurries move in over higher ground on Sunday, as the freezing line recovers to around 2,000m. The long term forecast then calls for sun and fine, dry and bright conditions to dominate as high pressure returns to the area.
