The region in which you’ll be exploring on this trip is a ski touring haven that offers a wide range of unique landscapes, from the gentle slopes of the Asten to the rugged high mountains surrounding the Hohe Sonnblick. This holiday is aimed at Advanced (Purple) and Expert (Gold) off piste skiers and previous ski touring experience is essential. A good level of fitness is also required, as you’ll need to comfortably ascend 1200 vertical metres each day at a pace of 3-400 vertical meters per hour. You will, however, only need to carry your day pack, as your luggage will be transferred each day to the next accommodation, which will be in small hotels or guesthouses on a half board basis. The plan for the week is as follows:

6 days with mountain guide, 7 nights half board, twin share accommodation
We are busy putting together our incredible range of Freshtracks holidays for the 2025/26 season, ready to go on sale in mid-July 2025. Please check back them, and don't forget to request your 2025/26 Freshtracks brochure!
This holiday includes 7 nights half board accommodation. There will be a daily transfer of luggage between accommodation.
Please note that travel is not included for this holiday. Should we receive a sufficient level of interest, we will look into organising a group transfer from Klagenfurt Airport. Alternatively, guests are welcome to make their own travel arrangements independently.
Our travel recommendations are as follows:
Fly to Klagenfurt Airport with Ryanair from Stansted – taxi/drive from there (1 hour 20/30).
OR
Fly from UK airport to Salzburg Airport – slightly longer drive (2 hours 15), but significantly more flight options.
Please do not book your flights until the holiday is confirmed to run. The Freshtracks office is always on hand to assist with coordinating your travel plans. Should you have any questions, please contact us at +44 (0)20 8410 2022.
Once the holiday has been confirmed, please send your flight details (flight numbers, arrival and departure time) to the Freshtracks Team via email to hols@skiclub.co.uk.
We highly recommend bringing your own equipment for this holiday (full touring setup), but the guide will be able to help anybody who needs to hire equipment on the first day. Shovels, probes, and transceivers are also available for hire – from the guide once in resort.
Please let us know if you are going to require equipment so we can update the guide ahead of time.
*Included rental equipment supplied by your guide (if required; to be arranged with the
mountain guide prior to arrival) Please notify us with what you require
before departure so we can update the guide.
As your guide organises luggage transfers by taxi, only ONE LARGE
PIECE OF LUGGAGE PER PARTICIPANT is permitted and sufficient as
weekly luggage. Despite the comfort provided by luggage transport,
optimising equipment and clothing is strongly recommended.
Packing of the day backpack and weekly luggage will be done on the first
day in consultation with the mountain guide. Depending on conditions
and weather forecasts, we will optimize the backpack daily to carry only
what is strictly necessary on the tours.
It is as important not to overheat and to avoid sunburn as it is to keep warm.
Therefore, try to choose light-weight, good quality equipment over heavier
items. A clothing system based on layers is best – you can control your
temperature much more easily than wearing one thick jacket. Avoid one piece
ski suits, they are not suitable for ski mountaineering. Average sea level
temperature in May are Min -10C Max 5C
This requires at least a few weeks of ski touring experience. You will be doing 300-400 vertical meters per hour ascent, averaging approximately 1200 maximum vertical meters per day. You can expect to tour 4 – 6 hours/day.
The best training is long weekend mountain walks. If that’s not possible, regular running or jogging works well. In the gym, focus on breathing and endurance – not strength
Matthias Lackner will be the guide on this holiday.
