ย
Onย Saturday 1st Marchย in Verbier, Switzerland, MGG ran the second edition of their newly titled MGG Winter Waltzย event, and it was one for the ages!
Take a look at a short recap film of the event here .
ย
MGG were privileged to welcome to Verbier 30 former professional ski ballet athletes, who between them had won three Winter Olympic gold medals (Hermann Reitberger & Christine Rossi in 1988, and Fabrice Becker in 1992), more than 180 World Cup gold medals, more than 450 World Cup medals, 6 World Championship gold medals, and 11 World Championship medals!
ย
And if that wasnโt enough, they were also joined by the godfather of ski balletย himself, Bob Howard, together with Winter Olympic icon, the Swiss legend Philip Richard! This was the largest gathering of ski ballet athletes in over 25 years, and a deeply emotional moment for those in attendance, many of whom hadnโt seen one another since FIS (Fรฉdรฉration Internationale de Ski) abruptly halted all formal ski ballet competitions in 2000.
ย
The day began with the Swiss premiรจre ofย Dancing on the Edge: A Ski Ballet Story, at the wonderful Cinรฉma de Verbier.ย After an emotional screening with barely a dry eye in the house, the athletes then dispersed to prepare themselves for theย MGG Winter Waltzย itself.
ย
As the sun set on a stunning Verbier evening, Bob Howard and Philip Richard held court, the athletes started to warm up, and the audience grew. The athletes began with a free-flowing jam session, with Bob explaining to the excited crowd the names of the various manoeuvres and tricks that each athlete was performing.ย And then, as darkness fell, we were privileged to witness an extraordinary sight: With Noah Carmichael, son of US National Ski Hall of Fame skier Jan (Bucher) Carmichael in the DJ booth playing the tune chosen by each athlete, and Bob Howard on the mic commentating, the athletes danced their way down the floodlit event slope in front of the wide-eyed crowd!
ย
Itย wasย a sensational spectacle, and an incredibly exciting moment for this unique sport which, as the supremely talented athletes who took part showed, is still very muchย alive and well.
