This Swiss gem, tucked away in the Bernese Oberland, is often overlooked by British visitors, but with a varied and surprisingly large ski area, Adelboden won’t remain hidden for long.

Although it hosts a formidable World Cup race each January, much of the terrain at Adelboden’s four ski areas and across the hill at the linked resort of Lenk, is ideal for intermediates.

Wide, open and often sunny slopes are the order the day here – allowing you to clock up some serious miles. The lift system, once rickety and old, has undergone a number of recent upgrades and crucially a new access gondola is planned for the coming years – this will make a huge difference to your morning commute up the hill. Snow reliability has also improved thanks to a comprehensive snowmaking system, which makes up for the resort’s relatively low altitude – it only peaks out at 2362m.

On the Slopes

The main access gondola drops skiers and riders at the summit of Sillerenbühl, from which runs fan out in all directions. Most of these are wide reds, several of which drop down over into the Lenk side of the hill – where wide blues are very much the order of the day. Tougher challenges are available on the Chuenisbärgli, the home of the World Cup track, and up off the Luegli chairlift – which is definitely the place to head to after fresh snowfall.

There are three other small ski areas in the Adelboden Valley, all of which offer extra variety and are great places to explore during your stay.

Elsigenalp is home to some tough challenges and a host of freestyle terrain, TschentenAlp has its own small cluster of runs and the stunning Engstligenalp has the best beginner zone and a small collection of snowsure, steeper runs served by four drags.

In the Resort

The town of Adelboden is rather sprawling, taking up much of the southeast facing slopes beneath the TschentenAlp gondola. Traditional Swiss hotels and chalets make up much of the available accommodation and unlike some other Swiss resorts, Adelboden is slightly more affordable. Base yourself in the centre of town for the liveliest atmosphere, just be aware that there is a walk to get to the main access gondola at Oey – this is also where the resort run ends up to finish the day.

Away from the slopes and Adelboden is an extremely attractive proposition. The comprehensive network of prepared winter walking trails is hard to rival in this part of the Alps, Engstligenalp is home to one of Switzerland’s most picturesque cross country trails and TschentenAlp is a tobogganer’s paradise.

the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.

With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.

Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.

Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.
