On the Slopes
Absolute beginners will really enjoy the sunny nursery slopes in Innerarosa, with great progression on offer on the gentle runs at Tschuggen. The rest of the local ski area is then one big playground for intermediates upwards – our favourite routes are the sweeping reds off the Hörnli Express. Confident intermediates should be able to make the most of the link across the Lenzerheide, via the Urdenbahn and then the convenient chairlift across the road at Parpan.
More advanced skiers and riders have a big playground at their disposal if there has been fresh snow, but note that if the skies haven’t been dropping the white stuff there is a relatively limited number of challenges. The best area for off piste is served by the new Brüggerhorn 6-pack chairlift. The new chair has significantly improved access to this steep sector of the resort.
In the Resort
There are two main parts to Arosa, both of which are equally convenient. The main part of town surrounds the Obersee Lake and extends up to the higher satellite of Innerarosa. Hotels can be found throughout and whether you’re looking for 5* luxury or a cosy, family-run B&B, Arosa has both. There are some nice bars and restaurants in town and up on the hill, the Carmennahütte is a very popular spot for après ski sessions.
Away from the pistes, Arosa is home to a very good network of winter walking trails, none more so than the epic ridgeline route down from the Weisshorn and you can even walk all the way to and from après at the Carmennahütte. The outdoor ice rink is popular and you can try your hand at curling or ice hockey.
Getting to Arosa
Access via Chur is very easy from Zürich and Basel is a good alternative. The drive from the former takes around 2.5 hours (add half an hour if you’re catching the train) and the latter is around three hours away by car (or four by train).

the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.
With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.
Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.
Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.
