The resort of Bormio is an old medieval spa town, above which lies 50km of well-groomed, north facing slopes that extend up to over 3000m.

Intermediates will love the network of blues and reds (there is only one short black run).

Snow conditions are usually fantastic thanks to comprehensive snowmaking and the northerly aspect. The attractive town has a lot going on – including the spas that made the resort famous – and a wide variety of accommodation is available, from luxury hotels to family run guesthouses. Further skiing with nine more lifts is available on the other side of town at Le Motte and Isolaccia.

On the Slopes

Beginners are very well catered for at Bormio 2000 at the top of the gondola – this does however mean that you have to download at the end of the day. The gentle slopes are served by a mixture of magic carpets and easy draglifts and progression on to longer blues is good. Confident intermediates then have the pick of the mountain, including the long descents back into town, the snowsure reds at the top of the resort and the Stelvio downhill course.

This however is not a resort for more advanced skiers and boarders, especially as the off piste is limited. You will quickly want some variety away from the local slopes, which to some extent the Le Motte and Isolaccia provides, but even in these areas there are few challenges on offer.

In the Resort

The resort has over 40 hotels, giving a great selection of accommodation. The only issue is the size of the town means that some are located a distance from the main gondola – but many run a shuttle bus and the local bus service does link up well.
There is a wide choice of restaurants within the medieval town, which feels as different from a European mega resort as you can get. The food, as with many Italian resorts, is a highlight and prices are very reasonable. Off the slopes, a visit to the famous natural springs, long famous within the resort, is the perfect way to unwind after a long day on the hill.

Getting to Bormio

There are four airports to choose from, all of which are around a three hour drive from the resort. Milan Linate and Bergamo are marginally the closest, but Milan Malpensa and Verona provide good alternatives.

Italy will barely benefit from the Nordstau conditions dominating through the middle of this week across the rest of the Alps, sitting as it does on the wrong side (for perhaps the first time this season) of the Main Alpine Ridge. It will not be without cold and snow, however, as the same cold conditions do make it over the Alps; in msot palces the freezing line drops from above 2,000m early this week to seas level by close of play on Thursday.

A few flurries will make it through; the best of this will be on higher ground closer to the ridge, with around 20cm expected down at Cervinia over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. This will be reduced to a few flurries in the Via Lattea or over the Dolomites.

A brief burst of sunshine follows for many areas, before the last few tails of cloud bring with them some more snow into the new week; it remains too early to tell exactly when and where this will fall, and how much, but the southwest seems to be getting the best of it.
